In this episode we unpack the second piece of furniture in the sanctuary: the laver.

We look at the purpose of water in the bible as both a ritualistic component as well as a cleansing agent.

We discuss the idea that the altar gives believers title to heaven, as Jesus was the sacrifice that will ultimately eradicate sin. The laver is the item that helps believers be ready to be people of heaven.

Psalm 22:16

The laver was a receptacle for water only - not for washing like the Mikvah. Water was a means to cleanse from sin.

Water and cleansing are forms of sanctification: change of the heart, character and spirit so a believer lives a life based on faith. This sets believers apart from the rest of the world. The law (10 commandments) is the standard for sanctification. Helps us come into obedience as faith and forgiveness never lead to disobedience.

Romans 3:19-21

We are justified by faith in Christ. He takes our sin and the law shows us what sin is. The laver is to wash us - showing us what we are being washed from (sin).

The laver is made up of the mirrors of the women of the camp - which is a picture of the law: obedience and transformation.

The laver water is a picture of living water - life. Someone can be cleansed and enter into the Kingdom of Heaven - get sin out of their life - and become spiritually clean.

Water is also a picture of the Holy Spirit, like water it is fluid, and people allow Him into their life. The Holy Spirit begins the process of regeneration and cleansing of the spirit. Like a dynamic stream, He flows through them like water. This is the basis of the gospel.

The laver was a picture of baptism: new birth, new life. Dying to self with our sinful self and coming out of the water into a new life in Christ. A picture of God wanting to cleanse us, not just save us at the cross of Calvary. Wash us and make us clean and pure of spirit, mind and body.

In this episode, we wrap up the materials of the sanctuary: silver and bronze.

Silver: in today's value, there was trillions of dollars worth of silver in the tent and Tabernacle.

Damon explains how silver represented the world around the Israelites (just like the Egyptians viewed silver like the moon) and it was also a shadow and type of Christ - reflecting back to oneself the inner character.

We discuss the symbolism of the silver in the fittings and how it sparkled in the light, just like the inner of light of believers sparkles through.


Bronze: represented invincibility and perpetuity/eternal
Zech 6:1

Bronze would patina green (like an evergreen tree).

The Altar:
The first piece of furniture you see in the Courtyard is the altar. It stood between the Israelites and God. It was the first station someone would come to after coming to the gate.

The altar was made of wood overlaid with bronze.

As a first experience it was like getting closer to God. It was a picture of Christ - as the wood overlaid with bronze represents Christ as the bronze covering the perishable wood (humans) with his righteousness that would stand the test of time.

Psalm 1:3

In scripture mankind is often pictured as a tree - like the wood covered in bronze. A picture of the dual nature of Christ.

Exodus 3:1-2

At the altar, sin was consumed. The entire animal was placed on the altar as atonement for sin. The blood was sprinkled and poured out. The is a symbol of the Son of God being sacrificed for man - the animal is the proxy.

The horns on the altar are a picture of our salvation and strength; hope of life.

2 Samuel 22:3

The sacrifice is reduced to ashes. The ashes from the burnt offerings are a picture of the finality of sin - just like the world will be ashes after God eradicates sin once and for all after the Millenium. The ashes mean the sin is gone.

We continue with our discussion of the materials used to build the perimeter of the sanctuary including the wood, metals, colors of thread and the symbolism contained in them.

We talk about the actual dimensions of the perimeter which is 100 cubits by 50 cubits and the symbolism of the number 300 (adding up the sides). Damon discusses how these dimensions are quoted in Zechariah and Revelation. Damon also notes that 300 is the number of God’s provision: Noah’s Ark was 300 cubits long, Enoch walked with God 300 years, Samson catches 300 foxes and Judas says the Alabaster oil could have been sold for 300 pence.

Damon discusses the idea of type and antitype in the bible and how it can be used to discuss how one thing points to another thing. Paul called it shadow (copy) and substance (reality) in the New Testament. We discuss how these stories are a map leading the Israelites to the coming of Jesus as the Messiah.

 1. Blue (God’s Law/Obedience)

We discuss God’s Law (The 10 commandments) and their meaning to the Israelites as well as how they are part of modern society and still have meaning to Christians today.

 2. Purple (Royalty/Kings)

We discuss how blue + red = purple (obedience + sacrifice) and how it represented the stability of the home and the sacrifice that was needed to be a king. We discuss Jesus as King of Kings being draped at the cross in purple, a picture of a real king with obedience and sacrifice.

 3. Red/Scarlet/Crimson (Sacrifice/Atonement/Blood)

Leviticus 17:10-11

 We discuss how the sanctuary was almost saturated in blood from sacrifices daily that pointed to the future atonement by Jesus dying for our sins.

 We discuss that the red color came from the Crimson Worm, “Tolah,” which was mentioned in Psalm 22:6 which points to Jesus and his sacrifice.

In this episode, we follow construction of the sanctuary, which was sometimes called the tent of meeting, looking at the dimensions, materials used and symbolism contained therin.

We actually start looking at the sanctuary from the outside in, so we begin in the camp. The camp was the area surrounding the tent where the people of Israel lived and how they went to the sanctuary.

We read Exodus 27:9-19 to hear what God had to say about dimensions, materials, metals and construction.

We start in the camp outside of the actual sanctuary, what the camp was, who was in the camp and what it looked like as the Israelites traveled to the sanctuary for their daily services. 

Damon discussed the 12 tribes of Israel and who was in them (based on the 12 sons of Jacob) as well as the significance of the number 12 and how Revelation mirrors Exodus at times.

We discuss the daily service at the sanctuary to bring a sacrifice for their sins and the symbolism of walking 2/3 of a mile to the sanctuary carrying the unblemished lamb to atone for their sins.

The walk to the sanctuary was clean with no distractions, like the wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt. The camp was setup as a miniature desert/wilderness to give the Israelites the time to reflect on their sins and come to repentance. They were met at the gate by the High Priest to take them into the sanctuary for atonement. This was symbolic of the modern time Christians are to have with Jesus, our High Priest, who we walk with daily.

Hebrews 4:14-16

We talk about how everything in the sanctuary points to Jesus in reality and symbolism.

We discussed the acacia wood that made up the posts that held the exterior linen, which created the perimeter of the sanctuary. We look at what that represented not only as the Israelites walked to the sanctuary but what it symbolized in terms of the Gospel and the righteousness of Jesus that covers our sins before God.

We also talk about the significance of entering through the East Gate as well as the materials of the thread used to create the screen or veil that covered the gate which also had symbolism pointing toward Jesus.

In this episode, we delve into the idea of the sanctuary and the specifics of it. We discuss why it is important, what it tells Christians today and why understanding the sanctuary is important to The Gospel. Damon calls the sanctuary "a way to reveal Christ through pictographically expressive language."

Damon discusses what the purpose of the sanctuary was for ancient Israel. He discusses that the sanctuary was the dwelling place of God amongst his people and that it symbolized His relationship with them.

Damon touches on the idea of the sanctuary being a pattern of heavenly things as reference in Hebrews and briefly discusses how the ceremonies and festivals all point to Jesus as the sacrifice for our sins, our High Priest in heaven, the Passover lamb and the First Fruit offering.

In this introductory episode, Damon discusses the church and what we believe as Seventh Day Adventists. He discusses the idea of the 7th day of the week to rest (the Sabbath) and then Advent (arrival/coming).

So Seventh Day Adventists are bible believing Jesus followers who honor the 7th day Sabbath as directed in the 10 commandments and who are looking forward to the coming of Jesus. They also believe in the Three Angels Messages in Revelation 14 and how that fits into prophecy and the second coming of Jesus.

Danielle and Damon discuss the idea of the Old Testament and New Testament complimenting one another and how they both point to Jesus and reveal the plan of salvation for mankind. They discuss the Sanctuary Message and how so much of the bible is dedicated to specifics on the sanctuary and the ceremonies to take place within it.  (Exodus is the 5ht largest book in the bible,) They discuss prophecy starting with the 2300 days in Daniel 8 and then how that links to Revelation and how all of the bible is intertwined. 70% of Revelation is quoted from the Old Testament.  They discuss the idea of present truth and what that means in terms of prophecy and stories in the bible.
