(The Center Square) – Illinois’ gun and magazine ban will stay in effect pending the outcome in the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, the appeals court ruled Thursday. Illinois banned the sale and possession of more than 170 semi-automatic firearms and magazines over certain capacities in January 2023. Lawsuits in federal court followed, challenging the ban based on the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms and other grounds. Four cases in the Southern District of Illinois were consolidated into Barnett, et al. v. Raoul, et al. After preliminary issues went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Clarence Thomas said the case was not ripe because it was not on final judgement. The Southern District of Illinois consequently found the law unconstitutional. Judge Stephen McGlynn issued an injunction against the law last month but put a 30 day hold on his order. Following the Thanksgiving recess that began Wednesday afternoon, Madigan defense attorney Dan Collins began cross-examination of government cooperating witness and former Chicago Alderman Daniel Solis on Monday morning. Solis admitted to Collins that he committed many crimes while serving as an alderman. Solis said he recorded many people over a period of two-and-a-half years while cooperating with federal investigators. “When I was undercover, I was basically lying all the time,” Solis told Collins, “to people who the government was investigating.”

At the corruption trial of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, former Chicago Alderman Daniel Solis has testified that he was able to steer real estate tax business to Madigan’s private law firm. Prosecutor Diane MacArthur played a recording of Madigan calling Solis to ask about a development called Peoria Park in Chicago’s West Loop. Solis testified that he knew Madigan was interested in an introduction with the developers to get business for his private firm, Madigan and Getzendanner.
