We’re breaking down the differences between body positivity & and fat-activism this week. We ask the all important question: are we obligated to speak out about injustices when they happen in order to be a good steward of the social internet?
We also tackle a listener question about growing up in purity culture and how it has impacted their sexuality into adulthood and marriage. We discuss how religion doesn’t have to be all or nothing and how we get to decide which values align for us.
Episode highlights:
“Please don’t promote diet culture, that’s the bare minimum of body positivity and fat-activism.”
“It’s sort of like ‘I’m sad because people think I’m unf*ckable’ and that’s not oppression.”
“First of all--people will f*ck you.”
“I’m not saying that a thin person with stretchmarks doesn’t deserve to have good self-esteem”
“It’s hard for me to imagine someone making their livelihood off of [fighting] diet culture and not making a space for fat activism in that.”
“I don’t think she’s an asshole, I just think she can do better.”
“I would love to be an activist for everything, but I have a day job. Capitalism doesn’t allow us to do that.”
“When you think about talking to your kids, think about what messages would have been really good for you to hear.”
“There’s research shows that the best way to make kids safer with sex is by telling them about sex.”
“I just want people to not be in religions that are harming them and I just want people to choose their beliefs for themselves.”
