KC Clyde got his first real acting role by auditioning under a fake name, because the director was his father and neither of them wanted anyone to know.Twenty five years later he plays Barney on Landman, he has worked in the Taylor Sheridan universe on Yellowstone, he runs his own acting studio, he just handed a TV pilot to Mariska Hargitay's production company, and in January he directs his first feature. The road between those two points is the whole episode. KC grew up doing craft services on his dad's fifty thousand dollar films, researched his first role in an encyclopedia because YouTube did not exist yet, and talked his way into a high school drama class purely so he could graduate. He won the Utah state championship with a monologue he had to ask his girlfriend to explain to him. Then he auditioned for more than a year straight and booked absolutely nothing. He also tells one of the best Johnny Depp stories you will ever hear.We get into what actually changed for him, what did not, the advice Ed Harris gave him on a movie that was falling apart, why he turned down every offer that came after his breakout, and what he thinks people are really buying when they buy a show.IN THIS EPISODE00:00 Intro02:00 Growing up on his dad's film sets04:46 The role he begged his dad to let him audition for06:24 Auditioning under a fake name08:42 Researching the part in an encyclopedia10:44 Zac Efron and Josh Hutcherson's first films13:13 Just be a kid, man15:34 Winning the Utah state drama competition17:28 A year of auditions and zero bookings19:25 Published in The New Yorker at 1724:07 Why he almost turned down his breakout27:52 Filming a feature with no permits28:35 Sold out theaters and a 2,500 dollar paycheck30:37 The thing you think is the thing is never it31:58 Turning down every offer that followed37:04 Becoming a licensed EMT41:39 Don't go down to the material47:14 Why great actors are never loosey goosey47:55 The Johnny Depp story51:47 Selling the pilot Source57:18 The next twelve months of his life59:26 What actually sells a pitch01:06:03 What he wants to be remembered forABOUT KC CLYDEKC Clyde is an actor, writer, producer and director.
