Isaiah 52 speaks of those who bring good news, proclaim peace, bring good tidings, proclaim salvation, say “Your God reigns!” It’s all pure joy and celebration! Titus 3 lays out beautifully what a pure gift Jesus is and all that He has come to bring. And John 1 reminds us, in poetic form, how Jesus is The Word who came to live and make His dwelling among us.

We fail to grasp the gift of peace that is ours in the birth of Christ. Christ has come, quieting your fears and filling your life with peace. Colossians 3:12-15 helps accent our Savior’s peace that He has come to bring on this Christmas Eve, removing fear or the need to fear. We hear elements of momentary fear throughout the Christmas story in Luke 2 and prior. But this is a night of peace, thanks to Jesus coming into the world.

December 24, 2024 – Christmas Eve 
Advent/Christmas Series: His Gospel is Peace: The Advent of Christ and The End of Fear 
Old Testament: Isaiah 62:6-12 
Epistle: Colossians 3:12-17

We obsess over and idolize the power and influence of others. Christ is born in weakness but is greater than man, and uses his greatness to make you a member of his family.

Isaiah concludes this well-known and powerful prophecy with, “The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.” There is nothing man can do to stop what God is up to! The Gospel reading is about Mary visiting Elizabeth (who was barren but now pregnant with John) and we experience vicariously the joy John felt being in the presence of the Christ, as well as Mary and Elizabeth’s joy and excitement as well. The promises expressed in the Magnificat are powerful in that they clearly believe that God is and will accomplish what He is planning to do, in spite of the plans of men to spoil them. God will prevail!

December 22, 2024 – The Fourth Sunday of Advent

We live in constant fear of not having or giving enough. In his advent, Christ brings with him the promise of total provision.
Jesus expresses in multiple ways how and why we are not to worry, that He will provide everything that is truly needed. Ultimately, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” So trust in Him and His provision! St. Paul writes in the opening of his letter to the Philippians that he is confident (:6) “that the one who began a good work in you will bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.” God will not leave things undone – He will provide everything needed to complete and accomplish His purposes. In Malachi we have the prophecy of John the Baptist – the Lord was going to provide everything needed, preparing the way for the Promised One, so there was nothing that was going to be lacking.

December 8, 2024 – The Second Sunday of Advent
Advent/Christmas Series: His Gospel is Peace: The Advent of Christ and The End of Fear
Old Testament: Malachi 3:1-4 (secondary sermon focus)
Epistle: Philippians 1:3-11 (secondary sermon focus)
Gospel: Luke 12:22-34 (sermon focus)

The incarnation of Christ means our future is secure and peace in the present is ours. All three readings speak encouragement about not having to fear the future. Psalm 112 speaks of secure hearts because of the Lord and trust we have in Him. 1 Thessalonians 3 speaks about being blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus – and in the meantime, we are called increase and abound in love. And even the Gospel reading from Luke 21 is the record of Jesus talking end times and how we are to be on guard, watching, and prepared – not fearful!

At the end of the Hebrews 10 reading, we receive encouragement not to give up meeting together (i.e. worshiping together). As we take in this entire reading more fully, in addition to the reading from Mark 12, we see other elements of worship and why worshiping together is so important (forgiveness, Christ’s sacrifice, our offerings, humility before one another and before God, good works, encouraging one another, etc.). It’s a rich way to consider why we worship.
