Narrator: Full Cast , Jonathan Pryce, Nicholas Le Provost

    Format: Unabridged

    Length: 15:00:00

    Publisher: Penguin Books LTD

    Genres: Fiction & Literature, Humor

    Summary:

Jonathan Pryce and Nicholas le Provost deliver first-class performances in this comedy drama series, which charts the misfortunes of a middle-aged HR officer and his trouble-making colleague.

Lazy HR officer Sam (Nicholas le Provost) and his equally useless workmate Peter (Jonathan Pryce) realise they are in trouble: Peter for lateness and abusive phone calls to clients, and Sam for his over-relaxed attitude to errant staff members like Peter. Soon their worst fears are realised when they learn that one of the abusive phone calls made by Peter has been intercepted.

Series 1 sees the duo inflict disastrous injuries on their boss on an away-day, profoundly insult his successor on a train, and rehearse for humiliating interviews for their own jobs. From Series 2 onwards Peter, on a tiny pension, has moved into Sams suburban home, where the odd couple continues to play out the curious behaviours developed over a lifetime in work. Together they must face money worries (from pensions under threat to the perils of being rich), and navigate their increasingly complicated love lives.

    Summary:

Kieran Hodgson stars as Pliny the Younger in Hattie Naylors engaging drama charting the fortunes of a household in Ancient Rome.

The Emperor Domitian has informers everywhere; no-one is safe. He rules Rome with a rod of iron, and is dangerously unstable and paranoid. In the snake-pit of Imperial Rome, all Pliny the Younger wants to do is get his letters ready for publication.

Except if he, his mother Marcella, their Greek cook Doris (who narrowly missed out on becoming the next Oracle at Delphi), and Venta, their slave with secretarial skills have any chance of surveying, they are going to have to negotiate a political minefield, keep their eyes peeled for spies and, most of all, not do anything to annoy the Emperor.

    Easier said than done.

Genres: Fiction & Literature, Poetry, General Comedy, Literary Criticism

    Summary:

Ever wondered just how much of life you can understand through poetry?

Tim Key is never far from stage and screen - from Peep Show to Alpha Papa to Taskmaster. But now he's back doing what he does best - attempting to recite poetry whilst tormenting his friend and musician, the equally brilliant, and long suffering, Tom Basden.

From ruminating on the meaning of family via his narrative poem The Godfather, attempting to get to the bottom of death via his poem The Boy Who Faked His Own Death, and also organising an impromptu stag party, Tim Key uses poetry to help him understand every situation.

'In any other sphere apart from comedy, we'd probably class this way of looking at the world as certifiable. Here it feels like genius.' The Telegraph

'The show... has a kind of artistry and strange beauty that makes it unlike any other hour of stand-up you are likely to see.' The Observer

'...You never know when Key will suddenly toss you a fantastic joke or startlingly well-constructed line.' Radio Times

  • Portillo's Hidden History of Britain Audiobook by Michael Portillo

Title: Portillo's Hidden History of Britain

    Author: Michael Portillo

    Narrator: Phillip Franks

    Format: Unabridged

    Length: 05:57:26

    Language: English

    Release date: 11-01-18

    Publisher: Michael OMara Books

    Genres: History, Europe

    Summary:

Discover the hidden history of Britain through the stories of its 'lost' or abandoned places and buildings.

Portillo's Secret History of Britain presents a compelling and wonderfully evocative history of Britain through the stories of its 'lost' or abandoned places and buildings. The chapters cover a variety of historical themes: Crime and Punishment, Health and Medicine, Defence and Warfare, and Entertainment and Leisure. Using a combination of his own investigations and archive research, plus memories and quotations from the contributors he interviewed for the series, Michael Portillo explains what the buildings were used for and by whom, why they were abandoned, and what they can tell us about our past. For example:

    * Learn what the ruins of London Road Fire and Police Station in Manchester reveal about the history of the emergency services in the last 100 years

    * How Bradford's art deco Odeon cinema encapsulates a century of film-making and movie-going

With evocative text that brings each location vividly to life, Michael Portillo describes the building and its activities in its heyday and compares this past life with its faded grandeur or melancholic abandonment seen today. Filled with fascinating insights and observations, his narrative provides a compelling and original perspective on Britain's social and military history.

Portillo's Hidden History of Britain features deserted villages, abandoned prisons, closed-down cinemas, empty hospitals, derelict military bases, sewers and much more. Complementing the text are 32 pages of atmospheric and informative photographs, including 'then' and 'now' images of the locations, which pointedly juxtapose their former glory with their present-day destitution.
