Sartor Resartus is one of the most unusual, even quirky, British novels to emerge from the first half of the 19th century. Published in 1836, its varied heritage reflects the earlier eccentricities of Sterne and Swift, curiously mixed with influences from Goethe.

Its subject matter is strange: it concerns a book called Clothes: Their Origin and Influence by one Diogenes Teufelsdröckh, a German philosopher. And though Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) became a household name in his lifetime, especially for his essays, and his work as an historian and philosopher, his comic novel Sartor Resartus would prove to have a lasting effect on contemporary writers. American figures in particular - Emerson, Dickinson, Melville and Twain among them - acknowledged its influence.

In addition, Jorge Luis Borges was among the 20th-century writers to salute the work, which he encountered aged 17. Borges reflects: 'I read Sartor Resartus, and I can recall many of its pages; I know them by heart.' Sartor Resartus (which means 'The Tailor Re-tailored') chronicles the struggles of an unnamed editor attempting to produce an English-language edition of a publication, which, according to the man who has sent it to him, is 'a work of philosophy which has taken all Europe by storm'.

This is the book on clothes by Teufelsdröckh, with whom the editor was briefly acquainted on his travels. However, the more vigorously the editor sets himself to his task, the more thankless and perhaps impossible it proves. In frustration, he shares fragments of the translated work with his readers, in the search for some collective insight. When a biography of the author arrives, promising to bring some context to the work, the editor finds himself even further at a loss. His trust in Teufelsdröckh begins to unravel, and he becomes suspicious that nothing about this book, not even its author, is as it appears to be. Is it a work of genius? A palimpsest with a secret hidden in its depths? Or is the editor in receipt of something completely different and wholly unexpected? Sartor Resartus may now largely exist in the shadows of On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History, and his account of the French Revolution, but this early novel represents an interesting phase in Carlyle's literary output.

Van Norden's Introduction to Classical Chinese Philosophy is evidently of increasing importance in balancing our 21st century view of philosophy in general. It is to Van Norden's regret, that when philosophy' is discussed or taught, it is almost always in the context of Western Philosophy' rather than a global perspective. Yet the contribution of China to global thought and understanding is crucial, especially in our contemporary context.

In his highly accessible Introduction, Van Norden gives an overview of the subject, from its mythical origins through its early history, and on to the most important time, the Eastern Zhou dynasty (770-221 BCE). This is The Period of the Philosophers. It is here we find the greatest thinkers, within two definable periods, the Spring and Autumn Period (722-481 BCE) and the Warring States Period (403-221 BCE).

Into the Spring and Autumn Period comes Kongzi better known in the West as Confucius (551-479 BCE), whose Analects have become more or less synonymous with the Western understanding of Classical Chinese Philosophy. Van Norden considers the life, work and ideas of Kongzi, and his subsequent influence (even in the present day throughout Asia), with the Five Themes of Confucianism' including Happiness in the Everyday World', The Family and Differentiated Caring' and Ethical Cultivation'. But as he points out, Kongzi had his critics even in the generations that immediately followed him principally Mozi and the Mohists. However, Kongzi's influence also continued through the Warring States Period, when other figures emerging such as Mengzi (known as Mencius in the West) (372-289 BCE).

In this fascinating survey, Van Norden's discussion ranges over Daodejing and Mysticism', Zhuangzi's Therapeutic Skepticism and Relativism', Han Feizi's Theory of Government', and later Chinese thought, stepping well into the 20th century with Mao Zedung. In the Appendices, Van Norden also explains Hermeneutics or How to Read a Text', and Kongzi as Systematic Philosopher'. A third (particularly valuable Appendix to the newcomer to Chinese topics), on The Chinese Language and Writing System' is not possible to present on audiobook, but is contained in the accompanying PDF.

Altogether, Van Norden has provided a thoughtful introduction not only to Classical Chinese Philosophy, but also in passing, to aspects of Chinese culture. The experienced American reader Brian Nishii, fluent in Mandarin, is an ideal presenter. Van Norden is also the author of Mengzi which he reads himself on Ukemi Audiobooks.

Among the many important historical documents from the Classical world of Greece and Rome The Antiquities of the Jews by Flavius Josephus is one of the most distinctive and characterful. Josephus (37-c100 CE) set out with the clear purpose of telling the history of the Jews from the creation in Genesis to the Jewish revolt against the Romans in 66 CE. Born in Jerusalem as Yosef ben Matityahu, he rose to become a leading participant in the First Jewish Revolt (66-73 CE).

Surviving the aftermath, Josephus was initially enslaved and became an interpreter to Vespasian, but he increasingly accepted Roman ways and ultimately adopted Roman citizenship. It was this combination of a broad education, first-hand experience in conflict and politics and a genuine admiration for Roman life (without undermining his profound respect for his Jewish heritage) that made him an ideal figure to undertake his various chronicles.

The most widely read remains The Jewish War written around 75 CE, but his magnum opus proved to be the most ambitious project, The Antiquities of the Jews. A considerable enterprise in size as well as scope, the 20 books of The Antiquities (written in Greek) falls more or less into two sections. The first 10 books present Jewish history based on the Hebrew bible starting with the creation of Adam and Eve. The remaining books soon leave the biblical tradition behind, as Josephus draws on the Greco-Roman historical sources available to him as a scholar alive and active during the times of Vespasian Titus and Domitian.

Though drawing on many other historians, the importance of The Antiquities is the considerable amount of information it contains, which has not otherwise survived in such detail. These include dissension within the Jewish community when encountering Greek and other civilisations and, of course, the immense impact of Rome. Josephus mentions events concerning the careers of major Roman figures, including Pompey, Crassus, Mark Antony, Julius Caesar, Augustus and others of which we would not otherwise know. And the account of Herod's reign in Judea, which spans four books in Josephus's narrative, provides detail unique in the ancient annals. Famously, The Antiquities also contains two references to Jesus and one to John the Baptist, though this is questioned by some historians who point out that all the extant sources for The Antiquities date from Christian times. Nevertheless the importance commanded by The Antiquities of the Jews in the historical record remains undisputed. The translation used here by William Whiston (1667-1752), appearing in 1737, is also a classic and remains eminently enjoyable for a modern audience. It is authoritatively read by Allan Corduner.

Taking a kindlier - but equally scientific - look at the existence and growth of societies, both animal and human, Kropotkin takes great pains to demonstrate that the principal of mutual aid is just as important a feature in life on Earth - in fact, even more important.

In this most engaging, absorbing and even endearing book, Kropotkin shows that societies evolve and develop better though the principle of mutual aid than by challenge, conflict and conquest. His chapter headings provide the overview: 'Mutual Aid Among Animals', 'Among Savages', 'Among the Barbarians', 'In the Medieval City', and 'Amongst Ourselves'. His positive and uplifting conclusion is clear: In the practice of mutual aid, which we can retrace to the earliest beginnings of man, mutual support - not mutual struggle - has had the leading part. In its wide extension, even at the present time, we also see the best guarantee of a still loftier evolution of our race.'

This humane attitude was the driver behind his politics, because Kropotkin the scientist was also very much a political personality. But Mutual Aid is endlessly entertaining and informative because it contains thousands of well-documented examples of his thesis, whether drawn from colonies of ants and bees, or mutual protection among small birds; or rodents and ruminants; Bushmen, Eskimos, Caucasian mountaineers; village life in Switzerland, Germany; or from the history of Guilds and trade unions.' Mutual Aid - A Factor of Evolution is a classic that should be far more widely known and appreciated.
