  • LIVE EVENT: Undocumented Student Alliance @ SUNY Old Westbury! (With Dr. Laura Anker & Erica Rojas)
For the 98th Episode of Immigration MIC, we return to SUNY Old Westbury with the Undocumented Student Alliance (@ow.usa) for a LIVE episode!
Dr. Laura Anker, Distinguished Service Professor of SUNY Old Westbury’s American Studies Department and immigration historian joins us for a candid conversation on her role in mentoring and advocating for undocumented students on campus and on the East End of Long Island. She tells personal anecdotes about her family’s immigrant background and makes historical parallels to todays political climate, and doesn’t mince words on the Trump administration’s adverse impact on our nation. In this highly engaging conversation, Dr. Anker discusses current happenings such as the impact of the “public charge” rule, and instances in which colleges can step up to protect their undocumented students.
Erica Rojas of the Undocumented Student Alliance then joins us for an important conversation about her motivation in advocating for accessibility in higher education for students. Erica takes us through her powerful journey from Mexico to the US, which she describes in glimpses and her experiences growing up on Long Island. Erica describes powerful moments in her life, which include coming to terms with her immigration status because of a class trip to DC, being placed in a difficult position with her education, and eventually how she enrolled at SUNY Old Westbury. A bright, hard working, and optimistic young woman, Erica hopes to graduate in the future and become an educator — but also expresses concern with being able to achieve that goal with the current political moment.
Thank you once again to the Undocumented Student Alliance for bringing the podcast back to SUNY Old Westbury, and as always, I look forward to continue building with community with you all, for our region of Long Island.

  • Zuley's Immigration Activism on Long Island! (Inspired By Immigration MIC)
On Episode 96 of @immigrationmicpodcast, Zuley from Long Island talks about how the podcast launched her immigration activism and much more!
Zuley is a DACA recipient from Mexico - she tells us about being aware of her undocumented status growing up, but more so how being a daughter, a sister, and the ambition to be a leader makes up her identity.
Her passion with working with immigrant students comes from the challenges she’s faced in her educational career, being set back from a lack of support, and going to a two year college, instead of a four year college like she had always dreamed of doing.
Zuley talks about not having seen her parents for almost 9 years; her mother had to make the decision to live to take care of her own mother, and coming to understand their choice to return to Mexico.
Zuley is a huge sports fan; she played tennis in high school, is a lifelong Lakers fan, (sometimes a Golden State Warriors fan too), and her dream is to see Serena Williams play.
She’s currently working at a health center that provides quality care to undocumented and low income individuals, and is using the experiences to fuel her ambition to become a social worker in her career.
“It was a sad year” Zuley says of the 2016 election and talks about the emotional reaction she had thinking about what the future would hold for her and her community.
She talks about the projects that she’s worked on, including advocating for the NY State Dream Act (which passed earlier this year), working with unaccompanied minors, and accessibility to a quality education.
“Now I speak in front of 500 people” — today, Zuley is a leader on Long Island, leading the Hempstead chapter of the Long Island Immigrant Student Alliance; her message to the listeners “don’t give up — there’s always a positive to every negative.”

  • Tribute Episode to El Paso and Dayton
This is a tribute episode to the victims of gun violence and the recent mass shootings.
In this episode I'll be providing commentary and I'll be joined by voices from our community and former guests.
This has been a difficult week seeing how much more tragic and extreme the violence is getting, the events of El Paso having been caused directly by the president's words, actions, and policies.
And so in this time, this episode is meant to be a space to process, think, and discuss.

  • Gosia Labno, co-founder of @kulturamag on being a "White" Polish DACA Recipent!
Welcome Gosia Labno, co-founder of @kulturamag, here to talk about her personal story of being a “White” DACA recipient from Poland, to the Immigration MIC Podcast!
Gosia is from Chicago, Illinois, is a historian, works in communications, is a photographer, videographer, a writer, and a dog mom.
Her family moved from Poland when she was nine years old; she describes her early years in Poland as a “simple and sheltered” - she went to a private school where she learned English early on.
Her grandparents had moved to Illinois because of the spread of communism in Europe, she talks about how her grandfather pursued the American dream, but held problematic views on race.
She describes her family’s decision/process to stay in the US, and talks about her older brother’s suicide (when she was in 5th grade) and how being unable to attend his funeral was a major moment in her life.
She talks about the second major moment she experienced with immigration which was the heartbreaking moment she experienced being unable to go on a class trip to Paris, France.
Gosia talks about being aware of the privilege her skin color brings, and refers to it as a “mask” of sorts and talks about having seen other “white” members of her community targeted by ICE.
The 2012 announcement of DACA and how she was able to attend her “dream internship” and how it fueled a lot of passion, but at the same time was unable to ignore the Obama Administration’s deportation efforts.
She talks about her experience with sharing her story, from being discouraged, to receiving a lot of hate her first tweet after the 2016 election -- to questioning if she would stay in the US.
“Now is not the time to be quiet … this is not just a Mexican issue, a Latin American issue” -- Gosia talks about the importance of other “white” DACA recipients supporting the fight for immigration reform and using “privilege” to contribute.
… and much more in the very personal telling of her story. Gosia, speaking with you was very impactful and moving and we’re gonna do great work together, and like I said, “Paris awaits you”.

  • Hoboken's Ron Bautista on Immigration MIC!
Welcome Ron Bautista (@ronbautistanj) candidate for #Hoboken’s 3rd Ward City Council to the @immigrationmicpodcast!
In this interview we talk about:
Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Ron talks about his background and the political/ economic reasons why his family decided to immigrate with a tourist visa and settled temporarily in Hoboken.
Ron’s family overstayed their visa: he talks about the complex legal situation his family found themselves in, and the way he was able to be petitioned for, which eventually led to him qualifying for a green card.
He talks about the time period he was undocumented, and tells the story of a social studies teacher he confided in about his status and the US Citizenship pop quiz that gave him support -- and how he messaged her right after he became a citizen.
Ron talks about always having a passion for community service and politics, the reason he pursued an associates degree in accounting, and the hard work he and his mom put in cleaning houses to pay for his tuition for his bachelor's degree.
Making the decision to run for mayor of Hoboken at 28, and although he did not win, how he appreciates the impact he felt his candidacy had, and how the person that became mayor instituted a “welcoming resolution” that discouraged local police from cooperating with ICE.
The 2016 Election and the importance of “building the movement from the ground up”, and how he is happy that there are so many candidates vying for the Democrat presidential nomination.
Finally, he talks about various issues he works on consistently in Hoboken, and how he views the future of the city from his point of view -- “those make a difference -- that’s social justice right there” (and he will also give you a tour of the city if you're interested!)
