Trauma impacts all of us in a variety of different ways. For some, the effects could be superficial and unnoticeable, while for others, the traumatic event is so incredibly influential, it can be debilitating and completely alter the course of our lives.
This podcast begins a series of both personally experienced trauma, as well as vicarious trauma (traumatic incidents that happen to others that directly impacts us as a third party.) We explore the "bible" of trauma study and exploration entitled "The Body Keeps The Score" by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, M.D. This book is bestseller and the "go-to" resource for therapist and clients alike, as it does a superior job of explaining just explain what trauma is, how is impacts individuals in unique ways, and directs us to resources to help us mitigate the symptoms of traumatic stress.
I encourage you to pick up a copy of the book. Below is an Amazon Affiliate link - full disclosure, I receive a very small compensation if you use the link. (It doesn't cost you extra to do so.) Or - you can often find the book used on either Amazon, eBay, or other sites. No matter how you get your hands on this book, make sure that you do. It is filled with invaluable information that can help you identify the symptoms of traumatic stress and give you the tools needed to manage those symptoms appropriately.
In this podcast, we explore the introduction to the book which is rich with information. This multi-part series will prove to be a very valuable study no matter your background or occupation. I interject my own personal experiences in to those described by the author to provide context and insight.
