Maddie Tarbox feels pissed about imposter syndrome.

In this episode I try to hold myself together while talking to a person who has been like a mentor to me, Maddie Tarbox. We discuss many topics from the deep seeded roots of imposter syndrome, how imposter syndrome applies to teachers, and bicycle face. That's right, bicycle face. The syndrome that doctors from the 1800's would diagnose women with to keep them from riding a bicycle. My only response to that is...men....why?

This episode was one where I felt an absolute ton of imposter syndrome. After experiencing a large amount of trauma I felt that all of my knowledge had disappeared from my head. I found Maddie while scrolling through TikTok and really connected to her material. So, to rebuild my knowledge base I took her Voice Function 101 course and felt a huge amount of relief after completing it. So, of course I had to have her on the podcast to talk all about it.

Did I hold it together enough to not sound like a complete dunce while talking to her? Who knows. I'm sure I'll find at least 1 or 2 things that I'll think about obsessively that I wish I had said differently. In the meantime, enjoy this episode with my guest Maddie Tarbox

Elliott Isaac feels grateful for imposter syndrome.

This was such a wonderful opportunity to speak to one of my bestest buddies on the podcast. Elliott and I discuss challenges in the music industry, the humble beginnings as a DIY musician, and his first experience with imposter syndrome playing hockey as a younger dude.

I am forever grateful for my friendship with Elliott. Not only have I been a teacher during his singing journey, but he has also been a great teacher for me increasing my guitar chops, being a great backboard for my own teaching style, and just an all around great dude!!

Aphrose feels like imposter syndrome likes to rain on her parade...

Not only as a performer, but also as a mother, and as a woman in todays society. We discuss the challenges that come from being a woman as well as a new mom in the music industry, the time she opened up for my all time musical hero, and our beginning days as voice teachers as well as the first time we met.

Aphrose, a.k.a Joanna, was one of the members of the original 4 at the school I started teaching at. The original 4 consisted of myself, Joanna Mohammed-Gonzalez, Lizzy Clarke, and Nevon Sinclair. These three, hands down, played a large role making me who I am today. I would not be the voice teacher I am today without them. And I am eternally grateful for all of their support over the years.

James feels aware of imposter syndrome.

Lizzy feels aggravated about imposter syndrome. Although, she would like to monologue on it more.

We talk about coming back to the artist grind after COVID, understanding and accepting audience validation, and learning to treat ourselves with kindness and compassion in the same way we as voice teachers do for our students.

Lizzy has been such an important part in my life as we were part of the elite 4 at the first music school I started teaching at. The group consisted of myself, Lizzy, Joanna, and Nevon. These three were some of the most supportive and influential people, not only in my teaching career, but also in my life. They challenged me, they comforted me, and they help me to see the kind of teacher I am and who I could become. I am forever grateful to all three of them!!

Galen feels very much one with imposter syndrome

In this episode we talk about our feelings of insecurity as teachers, understanding that "fake it till you make it" is actually "learn it till you make it", along with his story of how he landed a gig with Super Simple Songs.

This episode was not only an exciting one for me, but my 5 year old was star struck when he got to meet the voice he hears on tv everyday in person. Magical!!

As a side note, this episode does not contain any explicit language so that this episode could be appropriate for all ages to listen to. Which turned out to be a challenge for me, but we kept it clean :)

Patrick feels furious about imposter syndrome.

Patrick and I discuss talking to other people about their grieving experiences to help with our own, the difficulty Patrick experienced coming up in his early days as an artist and a member of the BIPOC community, and his new documentary called, "Tell me a story about someone you miss". In this documentary, Patrick sits down in a park and talks to random strangers about their experience with loss and grief.

This episode is an extra special one to me. Patrick came to me as a student after his brother, Jordan de Belen, past away from suicide. Jordan was one of my favorite students. Jordan and I liked the same type of music. And as a voice teacher, Jordan's classes were a wonderful treat for me because we got to sing songs that him and I both loved. I love our classes together. He brought so much light and joy to my week each and every week. Hearing the news of his passing was devastating. I am so grateful for the time I got to spend with Jordan.

Patrick Walford feels like imposter syndrome is a virus.

In this episode Patrick and I talk all about his passion for spreading the word on new music/bands, how hockey culture helped shape him to overcome imposter syndrome, as well as his humble beginnings booking his first interview with his all time favorite band for his high school newspaper simply by sending an email to the bands record label hoping for a response back. Spoiler alert...they do ;)

Matt McWaters feels fine about imposter syndrome.

The Matt and Matt connection spend some time talking about their feelings on imposter syndrome and how it's existence is normal and can sometimes drive you to be at your most prepared for certain things that might make you nervous. Like coming onto this podcast for instance.

Matt McWaters is a Toronto based musician, producer and songwriter in the modern RnB and retro-soul world earning production credits with notable artists such as Xavier Omar, Wafia, and Questlove.

You will notice that Matt's audio is lower quality from his camera. That would be my fault. He recorded beautiful sounding audio on his end and sent it to me, but I forgot to do the same for myself. So, please ignore the audio quality differences.
