Jesus introduces a powerful metaphor to describe the nature of life in Christ: a grapevine and its fruit-bearing branches. This metaphor reveals a great deal about who Jesus is as the source of our spiritual life, as well as what it means to be his true disciple.

Jesus answers his disciples' anxiety with the precious promise of peace. He then teaches them an invaluable lesson: No matter how dark the situation looks, God is at work to redeem sin and darkness through the gospel.

Jesus continues his farewell instructions to his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion. In these verses, Jesus promises to send them his Holy Spirit to empower and guide them in following Jesus' teachings. *This message was given by Eric Hill, Jr., an elder at The Garden Church in Baltimore.

As Jesus continues to give his disciples instructions in light of his soon departure, he offers some big, bold promises. He says that anyone who believes in him will do greater works than he has done, and that whatever they ask for in his name, he will do it! How should we understand these promises? Should Christians expect a regular stream of miracles in their lives? Should we ask God for anything we want, and expect that he'll give it to us? Jesus comforts his disciples’ anxiety concerning his coming departure by giving them some precious assurance about their future home with him in heaven. Jesus warns his disciples that he's going to depart soon, and he begins a lengthy speech to them known as "The Upper Room Discourse." He begins by highlighting the glory of God that will be revealed at the cross, and then charging his disciples with an enormous new command: Love one another as I have loved you.
