In Between Futures episodes

  • Can we redesign the economy for people and planet?
The economy can feel like something that simply happens to us. But the rules of business were designed by people – and that means they can be redesigned. In this episode of In Between Futures, we sit down with Sarah Schwimmer, most recently Co-Lead Executive and Head of External Affairs at B Lab, the nonprofit behind the global B Corp movement. Twenty years ago, the idea that companies should be accountable to workers, communities and the planet, as well as shareholders, was still treated as radical. Today, more than 10,000 companies around the world have met B Corp standards.Sarah argues that better business is not an economic impossibility, but a question of the choices we make.We also cover:
    • How to tell genuine business transformation from greenwashing – and why staying silent about progress can be problematic
    • What needs to change if business is to put people and planet alongside profit
    • Why board seats for employees, community veto rights and employee ownership belong at the centre of the conversation
    • The one change Sarah would make: reclaiming our agency to dream up, and design, a different economy

  • How do we tip the future in the right direction?
The world is on track to overshoot 1.5°C, potentially reaching 1.8°C or higher. For a doctor who has spent her career in disaster zones, those numbers translate into real consequences for people’s lives. In this episode, Christa Beck sits down with Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, an internationally renowned physician, humanitarian, and Executive Director of the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, at Impact Week in Singapore. Jemilah left humanitarian work because responding to one crisis after another wasn't fixing what caused them. Now she's co-designing the Global Tipping Points Conference in Kuala Lumpur, betting that positive tipping points can be just as unstoppable as the ones pushing us toward collapse. We also cover:
    • Why health workers, among the most trusted people in the world, may be climate's most underused advocates
    • How Asia produces many of the world's positive tipping points while the science behind them is still little known there
    • Why preparing for a warmer world means rethinking how we live with nature
    • The one change Jemilah would make tomorrow, and why it starts with the age of the people in charge

  • What Southeast Asia can teach the world about climate action
Climate experts have spent decades getting the evidence right, but many still can't explain their work at their own dinner table. Better information was supposed to move the world. Instead, it’s built an echo chamber. In this episode, Christa Beck and Seth Armstrong-Twigg are joined by Leo Horn-Phathanothai, founder of Bangkok Climate Action Week. After more than 20 years working in climate policy and research, Leo began questioning whether better information alone was enough to drive change. His answer is radical inclusion – or, creating space for artists, youth, indigenous leaders and others outside the traditional climate bubble to reclaim their agency and an active role in the movement. We also cover:
    • Why the region’s young population creates a powerful opportunity for people-powered climate action
    • How one energy expert had his first climate conversation with his family in 20 years, through his wife's art collective and his son's school
    • Why Southeast Asia's energy transition is moving forward on pure economics while global headlines report a retreat
    • How Bangkok Climate Action Week connects grassroots climate action with the World Bank and IMF meetings

  • S11E2 - How Could We? Centre justice and equity at the COP30 climate negotiations
Recorded live at the SB62 June Climate meeting in Bonn - a key conference in the lead up to the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP30 in Brazil - this week’s episode sees host Anne-Sophie Garrigou interview more experts at the heart of negotiations to hear what we can expect from Brazil's COP30 presidency and the challenges that lie ahead. Firstly, climate policy researcher Lina Yassin from the International Institute for Environmental Development outlines the Global Goal on Adaptation and explains why tripling adaptation finance by 2030 is literally a matter of life and death for communities facing climate disasters. Anne-Sophie talks to Glindys Virginia Luciano, International & Strategic Relations Project Manager at EIT Food, about how food systems are gaining traction as a cross-cutting solution and how she hopes that spaces for multiple stakeholders to have discussions will be created at COP30.Finally, Dr. Sanjay Vashist, Director at Climate Action Network South Asia raises important questions about climate finance commitments and the true meaning of "just transition" – particularly the difference between asking rich nations to scale back their emissions versus expecting developing countries to abandon their development aspirations. If you're interested in hearing about COP30 from us in the next months, subscribe to Climate KIC's COP30 mailing list.—This episode was presented and produced by Anne-Sophie Garrigou and co-produced by Bárbara Mendes-Jorge.Climate KIC is Europe’s leading climate innovation agency and community.
