  • Did the Salvation Army help Jews in Germany who were being persecuted during the Holocaust?

In the inaugural episode of IN CONVERSATION, the Claims Conference welcomes former Saul Kagan Fellow, author Dr. Rebecca Carter-Chand, Director of the Programs on Religion and the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Rebecca discusses her award-winning book, "Christian Internationalism and German Belonging: The Salvation Army from Imperial Germany to Nazism," which examines how the Salvation Army compromised its professed values while operating in 20th-century Germany. The book received the George L. Mosse First Book Prize.

Moderating the conversation is author Dr. Joanna Sliwa, Claims Conference historian and administrator of the Claims Conference's Saul Kagan Fellowship in Advanced Shoah Studies and the University Partnership in Holocaust Studies.

The Saul Kagan Fellowship in Advanced Shoah Studies supports international Ph.D. candidates and postdoctoral scholars researching the Holocaust, including archival research and writing.

IN CONVERSATION is a Claims Conference Saul Kagan Fellowship podcast featuring scholars whose research helps deepen our understanding of the Holocaust.
