Anxiety, excitement, emotions, ADHD, and emotional wellbeing… in this episode of In Conversation With Myself, I explore what happens when anxious and excited feelings show up at the same time.
Have you ever felt excited about something while another part of you is quietly saying, “What if this goes wrong?”
I’ve been thinking about how often we treat emotions as something to fix or overcome, when perhaps they’re better understood as messengers.
When I’m faced with something new or important, different parts of me can react in completely different ways. The Feeler might be full of excitement and possibility, while the Critic is already imagining everything that could go wrong. The Shy part might be worried about being seen, while the Therapist in me tries to slow everything down and get curious about what’s happening underneath.
In this episode, I explore the relationship between anxiety and excitement, how emotions can coexist, and why feeling anxious doesn’t necessarily mean we should stop.
I also reflect on my own experiences of university, becoming a therapist, working with my first client, and creating this podcast, and how anxiety has appeared alongside some of the things that have mattered most to me.
Because perhaps emotions aren’t instructions.
Perhaps they’re information.
And sometimes, anxiety isn’t telling us “don’t do it.”
Sometimes it’s telling us:
“This matters.”
In this episode, we explore:
- Anxiety and excitement as emotional responses
- Why different emotions can exist at the same time
- Emotions as messengers rather than problems to solve
- ADHD, emotional experiences and overthinking
- Understanding bodily sensations
- The difference between feeling anxious and actually being unsafe
- Becoming curious about what our emotions are trying to communicate
This week, I invite you to notice one strong emotion and pause before trying to change it.
Ask yourself:
What is this feeling trying to tell me?
What part of me is speaking?
And what might it want me to notice?
