In Defense of: A Movie Podcast

Ready to get spooky?

Dan and Aaron ring in 2024 Halloween with 2001's Jeepers Creepers - starring Justin Long, Gina Philips and Jonathan Breck.

A film that is held in high regard among horror fans, carries an impressive list of accolades in the genre, yet sits on Rotten Tomatoes at a critical rating of 46% and a Popcornmeter rating of 49%. How is this possible, you ask? We may have figured it out. Big yikes. Still, lots to admire, and lots to laugh about! Join Dan and Aaron as they dive into the details and realize that the production of this series may be even spookier than the movie itself.

Happy Halloween!

Oh, Bother! Its time to kick of spooky season with a micro-budget horror movie! From director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and ITN Studios comes this controversial and bizarre take on everyone's favorite bear now that Winnie-the-Pooh has entered the public domain. Turns out Pooh and friends have been re-imagined as blood-thirsty killers! But is this admirable, or is this cultural vandalism? Sitting on Rotten Tomatoes at 3%, but a Popcorn Meter rating of 50%, clearly there is a conversation worth having here. And as the first entry of the Twisted Childhood Universe, there's a lot to look forward to. Check out this episode as we chronicle one man's journey from the Walmart bargain bins, to silver screen box office success!

Are you ready to Slam Evil?

Back in 1996, this beloved comic book hero was brought to the big screen for the first time. But with a Tomatometer rating of 44%, an Audience Score of 31% and a box office take of only 17.3 million, clearly people were not ready for the campy authenticity of The Phantom.

Starring Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson and Treat Williams, this movie has become something of a cult classic. So what happened? Why the icy reception? Come check out this episode as we investigate and discuss the history of this character, the incredible production of this film and what the future could hold for The Phantom.

This episode contains selections of an interview with Billy Zane conducted by, X-Band The Phantom Podcast #133. If you'd like to hear that interview in its entirety, please check out their podcast.

It is high-time that we tackle a Netflix movie! Not only that, we come full-circle with our second Jennifer Lopez vehicle! With the weight of this production on her shoulders, Jennifer tackles her most ambitious role to date. With a Tomatometer rating of 19% and an Audience Score of 46%, you might think that there isn't anything here worth defending, but we dug deep on this one. Join us as we pull back the layers and discuss this production in-depth in what might be our most comprehensive and well-edited episode to date.

With a Tomatometer rating of 15% and an Audience Score of 17%, The Wicker Man remake from 2006 is ripe for the defending. As our first Nicolas Cage film on the podcast, we discuss his range as an actor and his sometimes 'operatic' performances. We also compare and contrast the original film from 1974. While this could be seen as an almost obligatory episode, given so many reviewers have dunked on this film, we are determined to find some things we liked about it, and maybe give you some food for thought the next time you sit down to watch it. So grab some honey and get ready to dive into this misguided thriller with us.
