Il DSM è il “Manuale Diagnostico e Statistico dei Disturbi Mentali”. Da alcuni è stato definito come la “bibbia della psichiatria”. E proprio come la Bibbia, o la Costituzione, sembra uno di quei testi capaci di strutturare la nostra società, e la nostra vita - che lo abbiamo letto o meno.I suoi vocaboli entrano a far parte delle nostre conversazioni. Le sue descrizioni vanno a costituire alcuni dei nostri concetti. Insomma, leggerlo, comprenderlo, e magari criticarlo, sembra imprescindibile.

Allora noi oggi ci chiediamo: ma cosa ci troviamo dentro questo manuale? Quali principi lo guidano? E come possiamo rifletterci?

The possibility of being offered and exposed to a multiplicity of frameworks reflects and respects the complex nature of mental health phenomena. Mental health crises might be investigated from a variety of perspectives. The lived experience of mental health conditions can be considered an irreplaceable source of knowledge. Cos’è un’allucinazione, un episodio depressivo o un attacco di panico?

Sappiamo cosa sono, certamente - sintomi psichiatrici. Il problema è che non sappiamo cosa sono - ontologicamente parlando.

Ovvero: sono la manifestazione di un meccanismo neurobiologico compromesso? Sono forse fenomeni portatori di un significato da decifrare? Strategie adattive, meccanismi di difesa?

Si è persino detto che la depressione, l’anoressia e la fobia non ce le ‘abbiamo’ mica, esse sono modi d'essere della persona. Ma che significa ‘essere’ depresso, anoressico o fobico?

Si è persino detto che queste patologie non accadono alla persona, ma sono proprio mondi, che la persona abita. Quindi: si è autistici, non si ha l’autismo. O almeno, così si è detto.

Si è persino detto che schizofrenici si diventa, come a raggiungere il culmine di una traiettoria unica, e personale. Ma quale formulazione può davvero rendere giustizia ai vissuti della persona?

In questo episodio Cristiano si fa portavoce della formulazione “essere”. Ma Giacomo ha delle obiezioni.

Quindi: la malattia mentale è qualcosa che si ha, o dovremmo dire piuttosto che si è malati di mente? Se non si era capito dai titoli, questa diatriba è oggetto di questo, e dello scorso episodio.
