Some Greeks want to speak to Jesus and he replies that unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies it will remain a single seed, but if it does it will produce many more seeds.  We make sense of his enigmatic response and discover why the Pharisees have been so blind.  Jesus makes a last desperate appeal to them so that they too may believe.

Jesus is about to perform the seventh and most glorious sign yet, the raising back to life of a corpse.  Before he does, he declares "I am the resurrection and the life!"  Many are thrilled to witness Lazarus emerge from his tomb, but others escalate the plot to kill him.

Ezekiel spoke against Israel's leaders, shepherds who failed to feed the people, caught up instead in self-interest.  Jesus in contrast heals and feeds his sheep, eventually to lay down his life for them.  He alone can rightly claim to be the good shepherd.

Jesus miraculously heals a man born blind.  As the man encounters Jesus and simply believes, he comes into the light; in contrast the Pharisees think they have the light, but move further towards the darkness.

The religious leaders question Jesus' identity: who exactly are you?  He in turn challenges their identity as sons of Abraham.  Jesus has the final word: 'Before Abraham was born, I am!'

Jesus goes down to the Festival of Tabernacles where the central themes are water and light.  As the religious leaders plot to kill him, Jesus speaks of living water and claims to be the light of the world.

The people were more interest in the food for their stomachs Jesus provided.  He, however, was talking about a different food altogether; not just manna from heaven, but LIFE itself!  Jesus subsequently declares "I AM the bread of life."

Jesus lists five witnesses testifying to his authority.  No wonder the authorities cannot see that the scriptures point to him, they do not believe.  Only through faith and the work of the Holy Spirit is the veil taken away.

Jesus asks the man by the pool at Bethesda a significant question "Do you want to get well?"  John expands on the themes of the LIFE he has come to bring: quality not just quantity.

Why did Jesus start his ministry by turning water to wine instead of, say, raising the dead?  The answer is in understanding the prophetic nature of the first three events in Jesus' ministry, then brought together in Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well.
