It has been 15 years since we opened our doors! Can you believe it?!  At that time we were one of the few store front yoga centers in the West Michigan area. It was like a signal fire! So many curious and dedicated students have passed through these doors and some have emerged as great teachers themselves. Many have gone on to open their own spaces and share these practices in West Michigan and beyond!

Since the beginning, our focus has always been on cultivating a deeper connection to Community through these beautiful practices. Self Knowledge and Creative Expression are the in-breath and out-breath of this focus. The more expression we celebrate in each other, the more our collective heart beats. Deep gratitude for your curiosity, studentship, and dedication over the years!

Bing Goei is an immigrant from Indonesia and come to the United States via the Netherlands in 1960 and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. With hard work and dedication, he built Eastern Floral and successful established seven locations, 60 year-round employees and more than $5 million in annual revenue.  

Besides running his successful business, Bing is a passionate advocate of diversity and entrepreneurship.  He created a program at the Goei Center called the International Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence, which is a business incubator that offers low cost space to young, minority and women entrepreneurs in Grand Rapids.  This program has caught the attention of the Kellogg Foundation, GROW, MEDC and other local organizations.

Bing received many awards and recognition for his achievements as an Asian American entrepreneur, which include: 2008 Junior Achievement West Michigan Business Hall of Fame; Michigan Floral Association Retailer of the Year – 2008; Top 50 Teleflora Florist in U.S. and Canada and Best Florist Wards by various publications– 2002-2007; 2005 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for West Michigan – Retail Division; 2001 Minority Business Person and 2000 Small Business of the Year.

In 2012, Jermale Eddie was introduced to the practice of juicing after watching a documentary recommended by a friend. He sought out more information and was amazed to learn the immense nutritional benefits associated with drinking fresh juice. Jermale bought a juicer and began juicing regularly at home for himself and his family. He was glad to discover that in addition to the significant health benefits that juice provides, the fresh juices are also delicious. This was proven by the ultimate test when his (then) 3-year-old son tried the juice and wanted more.

Jermale’s wife, Anissa, first raised the idea of starting a juice bar in Grand Rapids, and the vision for Malamiah Juice Bar was born. “Malamiah” is a combination of the names of their two sons - Malachi and Nehemiah.
