Cassie Silver brings both personal experience and professional expertise, as a mother who navigated a challenging infertility journey before welcoming two premature babies, both born at the same gestation and weight, she understands firsthand the critical importance of research supporting women and infants during vulnerable times. Drawing on her background as a former journalist, Cassie is skilled at translating complex medical research into accessible insights for diverse audiences. As a business owner and podcast host, she brings entrepreneurial vision and communication expertise to advance WIRF's mission as part of the Consumer and Community panel.  

Through her social enterprise Fiercely Infertile, she has created a platform that supports others facing similar fertility challenges, demonstrating her commitment to turning personal experience into meaningful advocacy and community building. Her unique combination of lived experience with prematurity and infertility, coupled with her media and business acumen, enables her to provide valuable perspective on research priorities and community outreach strategies that can make a real difference in the lives of women and families.

Joining us is Dr Kelli MacMillan.  

Kelli MacMillan, PsyD is a clinical research academic, and holds a Doctor of Psychology (Clinical), as well as a BSc (Hons) and a BA/LLB. Kelli is a Senior Lecturer in Postgraduate Psychology and a Clinical Psychologist. Kelli practices clinically at the Women and Newborn Health Service of Western Australia and completed a Research Fellowship in perinatal mental health. Kelli has established multiple research projects which seek to address important and current public health issues such as childbirth trauma, coercive control and intimate partner violence, vicarious trauma, infant sleep, and access to early parenting support. Kelli is motivated to deliver change with the application and translation of research into our community.

That is using ancient, old and new data and technologies to serve those at most need.

Dr. Andy Poh is a Healthcare Strategist, Executive, Leadership and Transformation Advisor for health systems. His career roles span the government and private sectors, which include advising country-level and organizational leadership on strategy, policy and transformation, as well as establishing and managing healthcare systems. His expertise encompasses healthcare transformation, growth and public private partnerships. He has a particular interest in the Future of Healthcare, emerging technologies and innovation.

She chairs the WIRF Community Involvement Advisory Board, where she leads a diverse group of consumers to ensure research reflects real community needs and delivers meaningful outcomes.

Joanne also contributes her expertise as a member of the WIRF Scientific Steering Committee and Grant Sub-Committee, and regularly presents keynotes at the WIRF Symposium. 

As an Expert Mentor Contributor, she supports early and mid-career researchers to strengthen research quality through authentic community engagement, helping shape research that is both ethical and impactful.

Welcome to Episode 1 of In Scientific Dialogue With...

I’m your host, Vicki Main. This month, I’m joined by Dr. Sean Carter, a John Monash Scholar and RANZCOG Senior Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth. He’s currently completing a PhD at the National University of Singapore, researching the molecular and pharmacological basis of fetal lung maturation to improve antenatal corticosteroid therapy and the management of preterm birth.

Sean has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, holds several international research grants and scholarships, and has received multiple awards for his conference presentations.

Outside of research, he enjoys hiking, surfing, and sharing a whiskey with his PhD supervisor, Prof Matt Kemp.
