Publisher's Summary:
An exuberant, hands-on fly-on-the-wall account that combines the thrill of canyoneering and rock climbing with the intellectual sleuthing of archaeology to explore the Anasazi.
David Roberts describes the culture of the Anasazi - the name means "enemy ancestors" in Navajo - who once inhabited the Colorado Plateau and whose modern descendants are the Hopi Indians of Arizona. Archaeologists, Roberts writes, have been puzzling over the Anasazi for more than a century, trying to determine the environmental and cultural stresses that caused their society to collapse 700 years ago. He guides us through controversies in the historical record, among them the haunting question of whether the Anasazi committed acts of cannibalism.
Roberts's book is full of up-to-date thinking on the culture of the ancient people who lived in the harsh desert country of the Southwest.
Critic Reviews:
"[Roberts's] awe at the region's beauty, with its sheer cliffs, canyons and mesas, and at the testaments to an unknown culture will be contagious for readers." (
Publishers Weekly)

Great read--- esp. for someone from the southwest!
Really well written and, especially if you are from the area, as I am (New Mexico), the story that Roberts tells just grabs you, as do the photos and his sense of the landscape. For me, a wonderful read!
Excellent adventure without leaving your couch
Not being from the Southwest this book acted like a walking guide to the mysterious disappearance and the researched history of the ancient civilization inhabiting the canyons. It was a good, easy read, with lots of references for more research. I would read more of his work without hesitation. I just wish he'd put in some maps to give an overview of the canyons he was hiking.
In Search of the Old Ones
I found this book referenced in a National Geo article and glad I did. The book provides a great deal of information about the Anasazi in the southwest along with a history of discovery up to current day theory about why they left these sites.
While reading the reviews for this book some found that the author's side story notes about his travels in the southwest in search of the Anasazi sites was boring, however I found they provided some context as to why the author wrote this book.
Overall very good, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the southwest, national parks, and Anasazi sites. The author leaves out the directions to the remote places he visits and explores. I guess he wasn't writing a travel guide to the sites and people will have explore and find them by themselves.
Great
Enthralling. Things like this fascinate me.
Much to ponder while standing in the dusty gloom inside Perfect Kiva...
David Roberts is my favorite outdoor adventure writer and this, in my opinion, is one of his best works.
Mystery will always surround the Anasazi. The land on which the remnants of their habitations remain is hauntingly beautiful and desolate. For me this book brought back many memories of trips I've made to these areas since childhood and also rekindled the desire to return for more. Natural Bridges, Grand Gulch, Mesa Verde have always been special places for me.
David does an excellent job providing a broad spectrum of thought and research into how the Anasazi lived and why they seemingly disappeared.
