April 8 will be a day Hoosiers remember for the rest of their lives if the skies can remain mainly clear. Shortly after 3 p.m., many will plunge into darkness as the moon blocks the sun.
Solar eclipses are rare and we are very lucky to have the path of totality passing right over Indiana. Since 1900, the United States has only seen 12 total solar eclipses pass any portion of the country.
It will be quite a bit until Indianapolis sees its next solar eclipse. That date will be October 17, 2153, meaning this upcoming eclipse on April 8 will really be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

The United States will be lucky enough to witness its second total solar eclipse in the last decade come April 8.
Many across the country witnessed the spectacular August 2017 total eclipse, which was the first of the 21st century in the U.S.
That begs the question: How will totality be different with our upcoming eclipse?

We all know not to stare directly at the sun when a solar eclipse is partial. As central Indiana approaches totality on April 8, the onset of darkness will be very quick. The eye won’t pick up on any changes in illumination until the sun is eclipsed by more than 90 percent. With one minute until the total eclipse, our sun will be 10 thousand times brighter than what it will be at totality. This onset in darkness during totality will allow you to see spectacular things in our sky besides the actual eclipse if the skies are clear. Be sure to look for planets and stars in the short minutes you have in totality.

We all know the sight of a total solar eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Earth’s solar eclipse is unique compared to the rest of the solar system. It all has to do with the size of the sun and moon from our vantage point on Earth.

Carmel High School Planetarium has been educating people on what to expect during the total solar eclipse on April 8.
Much of central Indiana will be in the path of totality for the astrological event, and planetarium director Keith Turner wants as many people to enjoy it as possible. “We want people to be safe and educate them how to protect their eyes, like with solar eclipse shades, but we also want them to enjoy totality.”
Turner says people can safely enjoy watching the eclipse, but, years ago, misinformation kept people indoors.
Turner says people can safely look at the sun when it is fully obscured by the moon, but, if they want to watch it as the moon moves in, they will need special eclipse glasses. “There’s kind of a misconception that the sun is never safe to look at, but, during totality, like we’re going to have here in central Indiana, we can look at the sun.”
Carmel and Indianapolis can expect to see more than 3 minutes of total darkness, with areas to the south getting more and the north getting slightly less.
