There are now 14 days until the highly anticipated solar eclipse, but before you get ready to watch the event, WISH-TV is getting you ready with important information surrounding your health. Dr. Virginia Caine, director and chief medical officer for the Marion County Public Health Department, joined News 8 anchor Dakarai Turner to help guide Hoosiers on how to enjoy the event safely and responsibly.

Your family pet may even be able to enjoy the total solar eclipse on April 8. The IndyHumane Society is hosting a family-friendly and pup-friendly event on the afternoon of the eclipse.

Music, food, and drinks will all be on site. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets, and of course, protective eyeglasses for humans will be provided.

IndyHumane says all pets must be vaccinated and leashed at all times.

The event kicks off at 1 p.m. and runs until 4:30 p.m.

One ticket provides entry for one vehicle to the event. Up to six attendees are allowed per ticket per vehicle. Leaders at IndyHumane say your ticket or donations goes right back into the shelter.

Indiana’s oldest city will likely experience the longest amount of darkness in the state. Scientists say the total solar eclipse will cause Vincennes to go dark for 4 minutes and 5 seconds on April 8.

City officials are calling the event Dark Side of the Wabash. They plan to have local talent perform all weekend.

School has been canceled for Knox County students on April 8. The Knox County Health Department bought glasses for all students, staff, and bus drivers to enjoy the rare event.

Knox County officials suggest people avoid unnecessary travel next weekend by shopping for groceries and gassing up vehicles before the eclipse.

Officials are also recruiting more volunteers for the eclipse weekend; contact Knox County for information.

The United States will experience its second total solar eclipse and Indiana will be at the center of the path of totality. There are viewing events across the state to witness the historic event.

Elevate your solar eclipse viewing experience at the luxurious Hotel Indy at 141 E. Washington Street in Indianapolis. They will host a celebration on the rooftop on April 8 from 1-5 p.m.

Tickets begin at $75 and the VIP experience is $300 a person. The second-tier tickets include a free drink or you can buy a ticket to get inside the venue.

As the April Total Solar Eclipse approaches, doctors are reminding parents how to view it safely with their kids. A pair of solar eclipse glasses is really all a family needs to watch the eclipse on April 8. However, as many parents know, keeping a pair of glasses on their kids isn’t always easy.

he Indiana State Police is trying to prevent the road congestion issue Kentucky saw in 2017 amid a total solar eclipse. Sgt. John Perrine of the Indiana State Police says when it comes to the eclipse, motorists have two options: plan ahead and be in a safe place in enough time to watch, or safely continue driving during the event.

“If you’re in the car during the eclipse, focus on driving,” Perrine said. “Don’t try to sneak a peak of the eclipse.”

Perrine says the combination of stopped cars on the highway and potentially distracted drivers could be fatal.

Traffic before the eclipse is not much of a concern because it will be over the course of the day, but, as everyone leaves at the same time, gridlock is a real possibility.

There is concern about emergencies that first responders cannot get to, so state police will be placed across the state to help.

Perrine says total solar eclipse day on April 8, 2024, will be an “all-call,” and almost every state trooper will be on the roads.

Another important safety tip from Indiana State Police: Fill up the gas tank. Motorists never know how long they may be stuck, and should give themselves as much time as possible.

Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Brownsburg is anchoring the eclipse festivities in Hendricks County on April 8. Organizers call the free viewing event “Race to the Eclipse.” It will include live music, food trucks, and other activities by the Brownsburg Parks Department.
