Today we will be starting the section of the Day By Day Kid's Bible entitled Bad Kings. We will be reading about Solomon's son Rehoboam becoming king and refusing to be kind to Jeroboam or the other leaders, which resulted in the splitting of the kingdom into two nations- Israel and Judah. We will see Jeroboam dishonoring and disobeying God by setting up false gods because his kingdom does not contain the temple and he is afraid that the people in his kingdom will turn against him. We will read about him setting up people to be priests, rather than obeying God and only allowing Levites to be priests, and so the Levites will move to the kingdom of Judah. We will also read that all of the people who loved God with their whole hearts will move out of Rehoboam's Israel to live in Judah, where they can love and worship God properly. In our discussion for daily application today we will talk about the importance of trusting God and following Him and his rules rather than man made rules that disobey and dishonor God. We will talk about the importance of making God the most important one in our lives because Jesus is THE Way, THE Truth, and THE Life. As followers of God we need to love Him with our whole hearts and seek His kingdom first. God WILL take care of us!

Today we will finish reading Ecclesiastes with chapters 11 and 12 as well as read 1 Kings Chapter 11. We will read about King Solomon not loving God with his whole heart and being led astray to worship fake gods by the women he married from countries God said not to intermarry with. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of making God the most important one in our lives and remember that doing so is the beginning of wisdom. We will be reminded that Jesus taught us that we are not to go chasing after things we need like people who don't believe in God. God knows we need things. We are to seek God first and trust Him to provide for our needs. We will also remember the importance of protecting our minds by not spending time with people who can influence us negatively and cause us to be drawn away from God and disobey Him. We need to love God with all of our heart, all of our mind, and all of our soul. This is THE absolutely MOST important thing we need to do every single day of our lives.

Today we are reading Ecclesiastes chapters 8-10. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the wisdom in knowing the right thing to say at the right time, which includes knowing when not to say anything at all! We will discuss the benefit of being peaceful when someone is angry with us, as it can have the effect of making up for mistakes made. We will talk about making sure that when we DO speak we do so with kind, loving words. We will talk about speaking quietly rather than shouting and taking care not to say bad things about people because negative comments about someone have a way of being found out by the one you spoke about.

Today we are reading Ecclesiastes chapters 4-7. Solomon has so much wisdom for us today! In our discussion for our daily application today we will discuss Solomon's closing statement, "God made people to be right and good, but people went looking for their own way of doing things." The world wants us to think that there are many paths and many ways of doing things, and what is right for one person is not right for another, but Jesus taught us that HE is THE Way, THE truth, and THE life. He is THE way, not *A* way. God's ways are higher than our ways. Jesus came to model the behavior God desires of us and to teach us THE way. Jesus taught us to pray with the Lord's Prayer, God's will be done (not our own!) and he modeled this behavior when HE prayed, asking for God's will to be done, not our own will to be done! Let us all be encouraged to look for ways to do things GOD'S way, not our own way today and every day.

Today we will begin reading the book of Ecclesiastes, written by King Solomon. Today's reading will cover chapters 1-3. We will read about King Solomon searching for happiness and learning through his pursuit to find happiness the best thing to do to be happy is to enjoy work! Can you believe it? WORK is the key to being happy! That is so contrary to the world's view of the pursuit of happiness! Being happy in our work is God's gift to us! So how do we be happy in our work? In our discussion today we will talk about reading the book Living Fearless, written by Jamie Winship. This book talks about exchanging the lies that the enemy tells us about who we are for the truth of who God says He made us to be. Doing this will help us BE who God made us to be so that we can BE who we are in EVERYTHING that we do, which will then allow us to look at the work we do with a whole new perspective and allow us to be happy in the work that we do because will realize the unique value that we were created to bring into the work we do! Voila! We are happy in our work and thus happy in our day, looking forward to the work we will do today, rather than dreading it! It is God's gift to us!

In our final proverbs reading today we will read the topics of Wise Words from Agur, Wise Words From King Lemuel, and A Good Wife. In our daily application discussion today we will talk about speaking up for people who can't speak for themselves. We will talk about the fact that this can be ANYONE, including men, women, and children, not just people who are considered poor. We will be reminded of the book of Esther, where her Uncle Mordecai encourages Queen Esther to speak up for all of the Israelites, since it could very well be for a time such as this that she was placed into a position that allowed her to do so. In the same way, let us be on the look out for times when God has placed us into positions that allow US to speak up and speak out for those who cannot do so themselves. If not us, then WHO? If not now, then WHEN?

In our proverbs reading today we will read the topics of Friends, Being Brave and Full of Hope, and Happy and Sad. In our daily application we will discuss choosing our friends wisely because Proverbs 13:20 tells us: Being around wise people makes you wise; being around fools hurts you and Proverbs 24:1-2 tells us not to wish we could be like people who sin. Don't even want to be with them. They plan to do mean things. They talk about making trouble. We will connect this idea with the feast of unleavened bread, where leaven is removed from our homes for 7 days since it represents sin. Like yeast, a little sin grows quickly and spreads throughout our heart, so we need to be mindful of what we put into minds , which we talked about previously. We need to be careful about the company we keep so we are not influenced negatively by those around us. Instead, we should the hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and keep company with HIM!

Here is the link to the fantastic article I read aloud to us today, written by Jewish Voice, that explains the connection of Jesus' resurrection being fulfilled in the Feast of First Fruits and how the Christian church came to institute the celebration of the resurrection on what is now called Easter Sunday: https://www.jewishvoice.org/read/blog/do-messianic-jews-celebrate-easter
It is my prayer and hope that my fellow Gentile (Christian) brothers and sisters in Christ prayerfully consider adopting the return of the celebration of Jesus' resurrection in future years in conjunction with the Biblical time of First Fruits, as Jesus is the first fruit of the resurrected dead spoken about in 1 Corinthians 15:20. This would serve to unite us with our more traditional Jewish brothers and sisters in Christ. It is my belief that as more and more "Christians" return to celebrating Biblical "Jewish" festivals at GOD'S appointed times versus celebrating them during the times that people have instituted (and thereby creating an intentional rift between Jewish and Gentile believers in Christ), that we as Christians would gain greater understanding of and be more in alignment with God's will for our lives as well as foster more complete reconciliation and unity within the Body of Christ.
In our proverbs reading today we will read the topic of All Kinds of People. In our daily application we will discuss Proverb 25: 6-7 which tells us not to make ourselves look important (exalt ourselves) but instead allow others to lift us up as being important so we won't look foolish in front of others. We will read Luke chapter 14 verses 1, and 7- 11 where Jesus teaches us that "everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted." We will discuss how Jesus fulfills even the Proverbs and how He gave us wonderful examples of how to live them out practically in our own lives. These examples are just as relevant now as they were over 2,000 years ago!

For those interested in understanding the big picture of the Bible, check out my podcast postings for reading the Day By Day Kid's Bible, written by Karen Henley, author of The Beginner's Bible. This is a year long daily event that is similar to a devotional book. It goes from January 1 through December 31. Don't be discouraged by the title; this is not just for kids! Written in story format and in chronological order, this version of the Bible covers the big story from Genesis through Revelation. Each daily reading will include discussion for encouragement about how the day's reading can be applied in YOUR life and sharing how God is using the readings in MY life.
