What happens to old oil rigs once they are out of commission?  Well, co-founders Emily Hazelwood and Amber Sparks are refurbishing old oil rigs into sustainable ocean reefs.  As avid deep-sea divers, these two friends are changing the game when it comes to oceanography.

What type of career allows you to travel the globe to do research as well as teach?  Some may not realize it, but Geology is a broad field that can take you to many places.  What are some of the research ideas and programs available?  Let's ask Dr. Lewis.

Dr. Jon Lewis is a Geoscientist that has travelled the globe learning about plate tectonics and now teaches Geology courses at Indiana University in Pennsylvania.  He also works with a variety of programs such as the School of Rock and STEMSeas, which are programs that have allowed me to travel to New Zealand and sail the Bering sea in Alaska.  Tune in and learn more.

Have you ever heard of Biotech - as a major? Well, neither did India Brown before discovering it at her college.  India was not interested in it at all, but with the possibility of a scholarship, and an encouraging mother, she decided to try it out.  And now, with a Master's degree, India is not looking back - but instead is looking forward and working hard in her discipline.  Now, as manager of a lab, India is showing others what it takes to be in science, through mentorship and fashion.

I have been out of undergraduate school for many years, but if as many HBCU graduates know, there are certain professors that make a mark on you and you will never forget them.  One of those professors for me would be Dr. Mary Jane Krotzer.  Dr. Krotzer made learning about animal biology fun, and it didn't hurt that she was an excellent artist. 
Dr. Krotzer retired from Stillman College in 2020, and before she left, I and other students had an opportunity to let Dr. Krotzer know just how much she meant to us.  Join in and listen to the conversation!

Can a 10-year old learn Biochemistry?  According to Dr. Daniel Fried, of course they can!  Dr. Fried has taken his love of science and created a program called Biochemistry Literacy for kids.  Through his program, he has taught students from around the world about the structures of amino acids and how they work together.  But, how did a student interested in music turn into a scientist who has studied in the Middle East and now is teaching young students about Biochemistry?  Well, tune in to learn more about his work.  You can also see it at https://biochemistryliteracyforkids.com/

In case you missed it (which would be crazy because I always mention it) I'm pregnant!  I am due November 18, 2020 with my first child - a little black boy.  I thought pregnancy would bring joy and excitement, which it has, but being pregnant during the Covid 19 pandemic, having to shelter in place, and not being able to share this experience with family and friends has been difficult.  I wanted to share some of my experiences during this and see what other people are going through.  Join us with this special edition of being pregnant during COVID 19

Alex Troutman is an Animal Biologist who got notoriety when he posted a photo of himself stating that this is what a Biologist looks like.  Known for his love of birds and small mammals, Alex is changing the game when it comes to who works in science and animal Biology.  With goals of obtaining his Ph.D., Alex plans to continue his work while encouraging the next generation to get their hands dirty and learn what's it like to work in the field.

Dr. Erica Morgan West is a physicist that almost wasn't.  Due to circumstances in her life, and the many battles that she has had to endure, Dr. West almost didn't finish her degree.  However, there was a chance meeting that guided her down her educational path and helped her get to where she is today.  Now, she is working on helping with the next generation with the help of Silicon Valley.  All while being a wife and a mother.  Ph.D., wife, mother, and business owner - meet Dr. Erica Morgan West!
