During my professional life, I have changed careers about 4 or 5 times.  After awhile, it is easy to think that you are not a success because you keep changing careers.  Never feel like changing careers is a bad thing.

It's important to have people in your life who will remind you that you are 'full of crap'.  Now, I'm not saying this from an insulting standpoint.  I am saying that some times, we tend to be our own worst enemy and that we hold ourselves back from achieving everything we are capable of achieving.   So, it's important to someone who will call us on our crap.

Part of the difficult path of my journey is this desire to wait for someone to tell me that I am brilliant.  It's tough because when I was school, as we headed in Jr. High School and High School, we were separated into different academic categories and I often wondered why I was never selected for the higher categories.  It was tough.

I can tell you that even with all of my educational or professional accomplishments, I still have periods of time where I question the value of my voice.  I know that's insane but unfortunately, it is true.  And sometimes, you have to be reminded that your words truly have an impact.

The first time I was asked to do something I didn't realize I could do was during my senior year in College.  I was tasked with the responsibility of creating a Martin Luther King, Jr. Ball at my alma mater.  When I tell you I had NO idea how to do it, I truly did not.  But I truly immersed myself into figuring it out and it was a wonderful journey.

Most people don't truly know what a mentor looks like.  We often use the word loosely to describe anyone who gives us information or insight.  However, it's important to have someone who can serve as a life coach and point you in the right direction as you make a variety of life decisions.  I was lucky enough to have found somone like this in my karate teacher, Master Anne Radke who is both my karate teacher and mentor (she has been an Advertisement Exec for over 30 years).

One of the best experiences of my life was attending the University of Tampa.   It was my first time away from Arkansas and for the first time, I was exposed to people from different cultures.  This experience really opened my eyes to different world views, different experiences and different mind sets.

Master Anne Radke is one the few women who has built her own karate school, Alpha UPKUDO Karate & Fitness in 1999 after teaching at Lafayette Community Centers since 1992. Master Anne named her school "Alpha" as a testimony that she puts God first in every aspect of her life. She has trained thousands of students.


In 2008 she founded the 501(c)(3) non profit A Better Body organization to educate persons needing health and safety training. Her focus since 2000 has been on the holistic approach to healing. Her students have won over 4,250 trophies, 250 division titles and one World Title. Her karate team demonstrates at community events.


Master Anne is the founder and Executive Director of A Better Body and 6th Degree Black Belt Master in UPKUDO. In 2004 she was appointed President of the UPKUDO International Karate Federation. Master Anne is a Certified as a Master Fitness Trainer, REAL Essentials Life Coach, Senior and Youth Fitness Specialist, Sports Nutritionist, and created the ABB4Me for mental and physical health, Victors not Victims, and Stand Up To Bullies programs. She is a Mental Health & Personal Development Consultant.

As a student of hers for over 20 years, I have had the opportunity to learn alot from her wisdom and so I wanted to share a rare insightful interview about her experiences as a professional and instructor in a male dominated environment.
