In this week's episode of the In the Lead Show, Nola Simon and I discuss the future of work and how Leaders can support, manage and enable their teams for success in this new way of working.
Jennifer Tsang is an ICF Leadership Coach who partners with executives, leaders & everyday people to build more consciousness into how they lead their teams and most importantly, themselves. She believes that leadership is an inside out approach. As someone who has worked on her own personal development and self-leadership for over 15 years, she started her coaching practice in 2020 to help others discover how to lead themselves and grow professionally and personally. Today, Jennifer offers a wide variety of programs and services – from individual coaching, to group and team coaching, mindfulness programs and facilitated group conversations.
Nola Simon is a hybrid/remote futurist, approaching the strategy of hybrid or remote work with a futurist perspective. She is the founder of Nola Simon Advisory, a boutique consultancy and the host of a future of work podcast, The Janus Oasis. Nola has worked some version of hybrid or remote for over 10 years, pioneering work from home for her team. Her expertise in fine tuning strategy, crafting compelling narratives and operationalizing hybrid/remote was developed far before the pandemic. She’s seen the downsides of alternate ways of working too – overwork led to a life-threatening car crash due to undiagnosed pneumonia. Her lung collapsed while she was at the wheel, and she hit a fully loaded cement hauler. Shifting to 100% remote work meant that she lost access to the office building she worked in for 16 years so she understands the impact to belonging, employee engagement and retention.
Nola believes the secret to hybrid work is intention. Communication matters - it requires listening, asking great questions, establishing trust and psychological safety. Flexibility and a willingness to experiment and adjust course is the way to build effective culture and process.
Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to implement hybrid work and engage employees.
The future of work will be about integrating work into life. Flexibility is essential to work/life integration - happier and healthier employees are key to successful companies.

What is relational mindfulness and why is it important in Leadership? In today's episode of the In the Lead Show, I have a conversation with Shari Foos, founder of the Narrative Method. We’re all susceptible to a certain amount of influence that can negatively shift our self-perspective and our perspective of dissimilar cultures and people both near and far. Whether those influences come from our own community, popular culture, or artificial intelligence online, there’s little we can do to avoid it. Shari’s passion and mission with The Narrative Method is to help peel away participants’ false assumptions and beliefs to help them refocus their perspectives and understanding. Through the modality of storytelling and a practice called “relational mindfulness,” participants are able to develop radical empathy, compassion, and understanding for those around them.

She thought she’d be a shrink, or a professor who trained shrinks. But life said, “No, go this way….” So, as a University of Kansas sophomore, Carol Scott took an elective course called Child Development and turned an amazing corner in her life. Now, as a 2018 TEDx speaker and author of two books, Dr. Scott is a coach, trainer, and keynoter who teaches this truth: relationships are at the heart of all success. Her clients arrive with goals to grow--a business, a family, or a dream--and learn new strategies for greater success in all of their endeavors.
Her first career as a nationally respected thought leader in the U.S. systems for early care and education began with that surprise change to a BA in Child Development. And then she added a BA in Anthropology, an MA in Early Childhood Education, and a PhD in Developmental Psychology, all from her beloved University of Kansas. Several influential positions in the nonprofit, education, and government policy worlds took all that education into practice that helped shape her profession.
Today, that first career is the foundation for an astonishing second act. The trigger: While earning her doctorate, Carol ran head-long and heart-first into her childhood trauma. Working with a shrink, rather than being one, she faced the impacts on her professional and personal lives of a “score” of 7 from a list of 10 Adverse Childhood Experiences, a research-based measure of trauma.
Her observations of children in the natural habitat of a teaching preschool sparked the idea for a new model for successful adult relationships. Adding her expertise in early brain development, Carol created a unique approach that revolutionizes everything from business management, to parenting, to romance.
Dr. Scott’s first book, Just Be Your S.E.L.F.--Your Guide to Improving Any Relationship, provides her basic framework and many specific tools for becoming a Self-governed, Ego-aware person who is Leading in their life and Free of self-imposed barriers--a S.E.L.F. Through powerful Development Do-Overs, clients release relationship struggles at home, at work, and in their wider world. Re-integrating their...

Humanity works! In this episode of the In the Lead Show, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Debbie Cohen and Kate Roeske-Zummer and we explored their five practices of leading with awareness, choice & courage. During our conversation, we got on the subject of trust. I believe that trust absolutely starts with self. As someone who has been around the block, I've seen so many times where we want to point fingers… We want to try and reorganize the business… We want to implement innovation and change at a very rapid pace. When we do this people are just stuck saying/feeling, “I'm not even able to be centered where I'm at, and now you're asking me to do all this?”
This happens because we're just constantly reacting. It's almost like we look at people like they're objects or they're like in a game that we can just kind of like move. In terms of that re-centering piece, that’s where we have the ability to come back to self. Anytime you're feeling mistrust or unsafe, or you're feeling reactive, how do you come back to self? “Self” is what creates that space to create more choices, better decisions, connection, or empathy. I feel like we're almost afraid of “self” and it's so key and it's so valuable. I'm happy to see that these ladies are doing this work because I think it's one of the big key missing pieces in leadership. Leadership isn't always about controlling your outputs and how you impact others.
It starts with you first. If you can't lead within yourself, you're not going to be able to lead others effectively.

KATE ROESKE-ZUMMER knows vulnerability-based leadership creates stronger relationships, more authentic connections and better results. As an account manager at Ogilvy & Mather, Kate recognized the power in distributing responsibility to the people on her team. She experienced first-hand that the whole of a team really is greater than the sum of its parts.
DEBBIE COHEN’s beliefs about human potential are grounded in decades of work with humans big and small. Her career began as a teacher and leader of early childhood education programs at Stanford University and the USGS. This era shaped her thinking about how humans grow and evolve, and the role environments play. She moved on, applying these ideas to building strategies with companies seeking to attract and retain key talent through work/life initiatives. This work heightened her awareness of systemic roadblocks and the impact they have on people and productivity. Shifting from consulting to internal work, Debbie began leading work/life for Time Warner just after the infamous AOL/Time Warner merger. She became known for getting groups who did not typically work well together to a place of shared focus and effort. This ignited a bigger shift into executive leadership roles in HR at Time Warner, Razorfish, Mozilla, and First Look LLC. The impact of Debbie’s work was recognized in a...

What does it mean to be highly sensitive?
Being highly sensitive is not a disorder or a personality trait. It's literally how you are born. About 20-30% of people are classified as highly sensitive, which means their nervous system is more sensitive than most people. Since the world is geared toward the other 80%, often times highly sensitive people can be classified as sensitive or shy or aloof, when in reality they process the world much differently. In this episode of the In the Lead Show, I talk to a fellow HSP, Heather Dominick all about what it means to be Highly Sensitive and the things you can do to care for yourself and use this as a strength, not a weakness. In fact, I would argue that Highly Sensitive People make great leaders and if they can use their strengths as tools and care for themselves, they can be impactful and inspiring.
