With the last rate meeting before the UK general election, PM Rishi Sunak is hoping for a rate cut, however this is unlikely to come through. That being said the event may be the volatility peak of the week watching EUR/GBP particularly. Outside of this is PMI data towards the end of the week across Japan, the eurozone, including France and Germany, the UK and US.

The big swing point in the coming week, starting 10 June, will doubtless be the interest rate decision in the US. The Federal Reserve is not expected to move, but with the Swiss National Bank, the Swedish Central Bank and the European Central Bank having cut rates, the starting gun has been fired. The big question is with inflation still simmering, is the Federal Reserve right to wait? There is also a Friday 14th rate decision from the Bank of Japan. Earnings are thin on the ground, but Oracle, still being led by the man who founded the company almost 47 years ago, Larry Ellison on 16 June 1977, reports Q2 earnings after the closing bell on Tuesday 11th. With it being an all-sessions stock on the IG platform is an opportunity to trade the move as it happens.

The US Federal Reserve has been closely watching wage growth out of concern that faster-than-normal pay gains may add to inflation pressures. Chris Versace, CIO of Tematica Research tells IG’s Angeline Ong it’s the average hourly earnings print that will feed into the Fed’s thinking, surrounding the timing of its first interest rate cut.

John Stoltzfus, Chief Investment Strategist at Oppenheimer Asset Management says investors are looking to invest in stocks for retirement purposes at a time when it is projected that US social security benefits could be at risk of being reduced in the not-too-distant future. With scheduled corporate news in the background, traders will have a heightened sensitivity to the FX markets. On Thursday there is the ECB rate decision. As IGTV’s Jeremy Naylor explains, it’s not the decision itself after the green light was lit last week, by ECB chief Christine Lagarde, it’s more about whether the cut is one and done or if there are more to come this year. Other rate decisions in the coming week are in Canada and India. Outside of this, once the dust has settled on EUR/USD the spotlight returns to that cross with Friday’s release of US non-farm payrolls.

Anglo may have rejected BHPs advances yet again. But, the courtship is not over. John Meyer, mining analyst and partner at SP Angel tells IG’s Angeline Ong that BHP could come back again in 6-months.
