“I’m sorry dada.”

He said it beside me on the stairs, just inside the gate that takes three moves to open. Press down. Slide the latch. Lift. I heard him coming down from the second floor with Doug, through the foyer, and I opened it before he reached me.

Before he asked.

People who have known me for decades read me as stone. That night a two-year-old looked at my face and pulled the true thing off of it. Not anger, which is what sorry usually answers to. Tired. He apologized to the correct feeling.

“I have to poop.”

He said it from the potty, where he had been sitting for twenty minutes holding my phone, “Wheels on the Bus” going around on a loop. He said it in a full sentence.

I have spent my whole life trusting people who speak in full sentences. So I took him off.

He detonated.

Legs kicking. Body flailing. A scream-cry pitched high and holding, and inside it the same sentence, back again in the crying voice. I put him back on. Nothing. Off. Louder. Back on. Off. And under all of it, the song. A bus that never stops moving, on a loop, in a bathroom where nobody was going anywhere.

He’s two, I said. His emotions are a two-year-old’s. And he’s tired. “I want to stand up.”

A new claim. I honored it. I carried a screaming person up a flight and a half of stairs to his bathroom, where the toilet sits low, built for him, and stood him in front of it.

He cried there too.

The whole time, I was negotiating. “You’ve been on the potty for a long time and you haven’t pooped.” “You said you want to stand up. You’re standing up.” I read the terms back to a two-year-old and kept granting what he asked, waiting for the crying to stop the way it stops across a table when the other side gets what they want. He was not at a table.

There was never a table. The table was mine. I carried it into that bathroom like I carry it everywhere, set it down between me and a screaming two-year-old, and slid papers across it.

My body understood before I did. My stomach dropped and kept dropping, the way it does in the first second of a fall, except the second didn’t end. The drop spread. Chest. Hands. The back of the neck. An alarm issued for wolves and fire, going off over a boy in cartoon underwear. Bluey or Spider-Man. I don’t remember. I stared at them and my eyes filed nothing, because the part of me that files things had left to stand guard.

He’s two. His emotions are a two-year-old’s. He’s tired. I said it again. The correct diagnosis, delivered on time by a fluent man, and it reached no one. Including me. His words are big for two. They came from this house. And I had been grading the feelings by the words, assuming a boy who can build a sentence can carry what’s inside one. I knew better while it was happening.

Knowing didn’t help.

Doug took him for the bath. The warm water ended it.

Fifteen minutes of crying with me and every tool I own. Six with Doug and a tub. The house went quiet all at once, quiet enough to hear the sump pump in the cellar.

Pajamas. No one said anything smart.

“I’m sorry dada.”

He came through the open gate, sat down next to me, and said it like the rest of his words. One at a time. Aimed.

I said, “You have nothing to be sorry about. Dada is just tired too.”

He wasn’t wrong. I refused it because of what keeping it would make him: a two-year old holding a grown man’s weather. I was the oldest in a single-parent house with a very young mom. I had a great childhood, and I carried what needed carrying. Both are true. The carrying stops here.

He nodded. Looked down. Moved closer. I put my arm around him and kissed his forehead.

Dinner. Three stories from a Paw Patrol book. Doug took him up.

I sat in our bed working on something else, not this. After a while Doug carried him in, asleep, and laid him down next to me. I shut everything off and held him. He’s two. His emotions are a two-year-old’s.

And I’m tired.

He knew before I did. He said it on the stairs with the wrong sentence and the right aim. Half an hour. Then I got up and went back to work.

Here is the part I would say to someone still in it.

I’m tired. He’s tired. And I was still negotiating.

You have a diagnosis like that somewhere. A true thing you named months ago, about the job, the marriage, the pace, your own body. You say it in the car, in the shower, at dinner, and then keep living like you never said it. I understood everything on those stairs, and by the end of the night I was back at work. Knowing is not a move. I keep learning that.

So the smaller ask, the one I’m working on too: figure out what your warm water is. Not the diagnosis. You have that cold. The thing that would actually end the crying. You don’t have to run the bath yet. Just know where it is.

Still in the middle.

The last argument was about where the plunger goes.

Not the wallpaper. Not the marble. The plunger. Months of decisions, some of them expensive, and the last one standing was whether a rubber cup on a stick gets a home in a room I built like it mattered. It does. Under the sink, behind the skirt. Everything gets a place. Even the thing nobody wants to see.

The room is five feet wide and twelve feet long. The smallest room in a two-hundred-year-old house. There was a whole house asking. I picked this one. It was the only one I could hold.

The first room I ever made was ten feet by eight, off campus. A relationship that was wrong in ways I could not say out loud yet. Bus rides in the rain. I came home to that room and worked on it because it was the one thing that answered when I did. I cut cheap linoleum tiles with a blade and laid a floor. I repainted the walls three times a year with a little speaker going loud enough to feel like company. The bed got done last, every time. I did not know what I was doing. I knew that if I changed the room, something changed in me, and back then that was the only trade on the table.

So when it was time to make something again, I started where I always start. The floor.

Bardiglio and Carrara. Grey and white marble laid in a checkerboard on the diamond, because the diagonal makes a small room lie about its size. The people before us had done the room in country farmhouse. Peacock drapes. Candlestick sconces wearing little lampshades. Bronze everything. I took all of it down. The sink stayed. Old hammered brass, shaped by somebody’s actual hands, and I had it restored instead of replaced. The drain part was hard to find, and when it finally turned up the sink was too old to take all of it, so the overflow is shut now. I gave up a working drain for a nod to history.

The window stayed too, and it lets in a little of every season it is supposed to keep out. That is how I feel about old houses. This one is older than my last name. The name crossed water to get here. They say it was spelled different once, and nobody wrote down when it changed. The past gets to linger in the recesses. It does not get to run the place. The old things in this room kept their jobs by being forgiven something.

Then the walls. Navy so dark it reads black, textured like crocodile, which sounds like a lot and is a lot, and the room is five feet wide, so a lot is the assignment. A mirror across the whole wall to throw the light back. I almost did not do it. For two days I kept asking whether to trade it for a small shaped mirror and more crocodile. The room would have been a hallway.

Then the mirror went in with a gap down each side, and I asked the glass man if flush was fair. It was not. Glass needs room to move or it cracks, and old walls are never straight. So Charlie bent a strip of black molding to follow the walls, black so it reads as one more shadow in the crocodile. The house was not going to straighten out for a mirror.

Alabaster sconces shaped like eggs, bronze at the base, and I hung them at average eye level, which is not my eye level. I am six three. I lit the room for everyone who is not me. The ceiling bulbs came sealed in the box, labeled warm. The label said one thing. The light said another. The light won.

Paint took twenty-seven swatches and then it took mixing. There is a paint store with an old bell on the door and a woman inside who never once rushed me. At some point we stopped choosing colors and started building one. She was afraid of too much white. Then, on the next sample, afraid of too much black. Somewhere in there we added red. I could not tell you why. The eye said closer. The cans came home numbered in marker, and the two that won say This is it on the lid, starred, in my handwriting, over a label that just reads custom. The color in that room does not have a name. It has a formula and a phone number.

The sink got a skirt. Genevieve Gorder wants movement in a skirt. Some pattern, some life. She is right for most rooms. I held plain camel anyway. Gathered, hemmed a quarter inch off the floor so it floats without showing you it floats. One evening mid-build I asked, is this too feminine. Nobody answered. Everything stayed.

The Roman shade was custom, and it still came out of the box in creases. Oyster, cordless, because a two-year-old lives here and cords are for houses without two-year-olds. I stood at the window with the steamer until the folds broke where folds are supposed to break.

The smallest room made the biggest mess. Dust from a five by twelve found the whole first floor, and for weeks my son’s favorite toys sat captive in the living room, the indoor slide too, and he was a year and a half old with opinions about it. So every evening after the guys wrapped, we cleaned. Swept, wiped down, got the dust off everything a small person touches. Then he got his slide back until morning.

There is a brass heron on the wall now. A hook for a hand towel. The heron is old too, found on eBay, off the wall of somebody else’s old house. And a great blue visits us most mornings at dawn and gets his breakfast from the creek, so the hook is his. I measured it twelve and a half inches off the mirror edge, hook point at fifty-two, checked it twice against the sconce before I let the drill touch old plaster. Then the towel went on backorder until August. So the heron hung there empty for weeks, holding a job it could not do yet, and I looked at it every day anyway. There is a towel on it now, a stand-in, and it is wrong. It is supposed to sit a half inch off the marble and it dusts it instead. But my son is two, and he needs somewhere to dry his hands after the potty, and after running in the grass along the creek where the real one eats. The wrong towel hangs on the right hook.

The baseboard heater was built in place, the metal cut and shaped around the mechanism by the heater man’s own hands, and the metal only comes white. White in a navy room. The answer was paint, except the wall is not paint, it is textured crocodile, so this meant matching a color to a material. We scanned a scrap and tinted an enamel that can take the heat, satin so it would not shine. It does not match the wall. Nothing could. The goal was for it to recede. It reads as shadow now.

Placement night was its own campaign. The cognac leather trash can got rotated so its cleaner face greets the door. The brass tissue holder moved in one-inch increments until the wall pushed back and that was that. Somewhere in the middle of it I typed a note to myself, Can I’ve tissue holder closer to wall. I took notes every day, in and out of that room, and read them back every time I regrouped. I am leaving the typo. And when everything was placed I stepped back and saw a thing nobody planned. Brass sitting low. Wood in the middle. Sculpture up top. The room had layered itself while I was busy arguing inches.

In the college room the bed got done last, every time. Here it was the art. It went up at 10:22 at night. A Cristina Martinez print in a custom frame, and I centered it on the toilet, not the wall, because the frame answers the object below it, and because the composition has to work twice. Once straight on. Once in the mirror.

The print is signed, the edges torn rough where the paper was made, and a mat would have covered them. I wrote myself a note, I don’t want to cover the edges. So it floats on a board with the whole edge showing, and the board took four rounds. Antique White looked yellow. Cloud looked too grey. Fog never had a chance. Smooth White won by being the plainest thing left after every interesting option failed the eye. Same verdict as the camel. And it is a print. It is holding the wall until the real painting comes available. I framed it like forever anyway.

I did not buy any of this fast. The samples sat in the room for weeks and I watched them under every light the day had before I ordered a thing. Then I ordered all of it in one sitting. Deciding was the work. Buying was the receipt.

The room is done, except it is not. A marble hand pump is still on a truck somewhere between a warehouse and my door. And there is the branch. Manzanita, standing in a small vase under the sconce, measured so it would hold three inches of air below the egg, and on the last cut I chipped it. You cannot see the chip from the door. I see it every time. I may buy another branch and try the cut again. I may leave it. I have not decided and I am in no hurry to.

Some evenings I stand in there with nothing to do. The room goes dark but still glows. It settles me. The wallpaper still smells new. The door is old and creaks a little. The WD-40 holds for a while. The creak comes back.

But here is the thing I keep standing in the doorway with. The room is right. The floor still lies about its size, the way I asked it to. Every argument in here got settled, down to the plunger. And something is missing. I have gone through it object by object looking for the gap and there is no gap. I do not know what it is. It does not have a name yet.

It is also why I have not had the room photographed, not properly. A proper photograph goes on the record, and the record says finished. I am not ready to say that. Every one of the phone pictures has me in the mirror anyway.

Maybe it comes with the towel.

Here is the part I would say to someone still in it.

When the whole thing is more than you can hold, stop trying to hold the whole thing. Pick your five by twelve. One product. One page of the deck. Whatever your hands actually fit around.

Then finish it all the way down, past the pretty decisions into where the plunger goes. Finishing something small teaches your hands what done feels like.

Your hands keep that.

Still in the middle.

I have never been lost a day in my life. Now I wake up and have to invent the reason.

Every morning I grab a banana off the counter and fill the same forty-ounce jug with water. I tap my phone and the front door locks behind me. Down the stairs, along the red brick, across the driveway. The creek runs on the other side of it, and there is a waterfall there, small but steady, and it is loud enough that I should hear it every single time.

Most days I do not hear it.

I keep walking. Stone path, the pool on my left, the blue stone. There are three bridges. My walk to work crosses one of them and passes the other two. My office is a black building at the end of the walk. When I sit at the desk the pool is behind me through the windows, and the creek runs just left of me, close enough to hear if I opened the window.

I hardly open the window.

Then I sit down and look at the list.

The list says meditate. It says write. It says make the outreach calls, follow up on the emails. Reasonable things. I check most of them off by the end of the day.

Here is what I have not said out loud.

The list is made up.

I write it so the morning has somewhere to go.

The list used to write itself. Team meeting Monday morning. Investor calls. The weekly dashboard review. Amazon is off track, get it back on track. What are we pitching at the next line review. Is there enough capital. Nobody had to convince me the day mattered. The day arrived already spoken for, and I answered it, and that was a life.

Out in the world now, every car is going somewhere it has to be. The shop owners downtown, opening their doors at the same hour they opened them yesterday. The sitter who watches our son so Doug and I can be two adults at a table for an hour. The man on the garbage truck knows exactly what Tuesday is for. I used to feel sorry for anybody chained to a schedule. I am not sure anymore which one of us I feel sorry for.

The feeling used to come in the afternoon. A little drift around three o’clock, easy to walk off. Now it comes before lunch. Some mornings it is waiting for me at the desk. It only ever asks two questions. What does the future hold. What am I supposed to be getting up and doing every day.

My son is the closest thing I have to an answer. But he is two, and his whole job is to grow up and need me less, if I do mine right. Hanging the question on him is not fair to either of us. The question is about the rest of it.

For the rest of it, I do not have an answer. That is new. I built my name on knowing the next move. I could not tell you mine.

We had people over this weekend. Twenty of us at a long table, the pool behind us, kids splashing in it, one of my favorite mixes going on a speaker somewhere, a hot day gone humid. The close table: family, the people who knew me before any of it. I was making my rounds when someone at the table started telling me about her job. She hates it. A boss who makes the work smaller than she is. A ceiling she can see from her desk. She wants to work for herself someday, she said, and she looked at me when she said it, because from where she sits I am the proof it can be done.

I gave her the honest answer. Working for yourself sounds like the summit. A job is a thing you get to go home from. When you own the thing, there is no home from it. People feed their families off it. I fed mine off it. You carry all of that to bed with you.

She and her husband asked what I would have done differently. They see a man with answers. I answered as a man in the middle of the question.

Here is the part I did not say at the table.

I envied her.

Not the boss. Not the ceiling. I envied that her days have a shape she did not have to invent. She hates her job, and her job still tells her what tomorrow is for. Monday knows what it wants from her. I sat at my own table, at my own party, envying a job she cannot wait to leave.

I have read that sentence twenty times now and I still do not fully understand the man who wrote it. But it is true, so it stays.

I keep waiting for the drift to break something loose in me. Instead it holds my hand. A child, almost ready to let go, not ready yet. It walks with me across the brick, over the bridge, past the water I do not hear, up to the desk, into the list. I cannot shake it loose. Time does that part.

But there is one line on the list I did not make up.

The writing. Nobody assigned it. No buyer is waiting, no projection depends on it, nothing breaks if I stop. I get up for it anyway. Some mornings it is the only line on the list that pulls instead of pushes, and I sit down to the page the way I used to sit down to a room I was redoing, swatches and floor plans everywhere, hands first, hours gone before I look up. I have spent my whole life keeping things in. The writing lets some of it out. Some of what comes out is dark. It stops circling once it is on the page, and I am easier to live with on the days I write. Doug could tell you. My son cannot yet. He is the reason I want to be the man the writing is making.

When I put something true on the page, somebody writes back and says me too, and for a minute the day has a point I did not have to invent.

I am not calling it a direction. It is too early and I have been wrong before. It is a pull. I am following it the way you follow water downhill, not because you know where it ends, because it is the only thing moving.

Yesterday, on the walk back, I stopped on the small bridge outside my office. On purpose. I used to stop there once in a long while during the company years, when the noise got loud enough, and listen to the water move over the rocks. It was the closest thing I had to meditation. Then I would go back in and answer the day.

Yesterday I stood there with no day to answer, and I listened for the waterfall the way you listen for a child in another room.

It was there. It had been there the whole time, all those mornings I crossed it deaf.

Most days I still walk past it.

Some days I stop.

Here is the part I would say to someone still in it.

Right now your list writes itself. Payroll, the launch, the board, the shift. One day it will not, the sale, the layoff, the last kid, the knee, and the quiet will ask you what the day is for. So do this while the day is still spoken for. Look at your list this week and find the one line nobody assigned you. The thing you would still do if nothing required it. Circle it. Give it one protected hour a week, starting Monday. That line is not a task. It is the first entry on your next list, and if you find it early, then when the quiet comes, the first line is already written.

I found mine late. It is the only reason you are reading this.

Still in the middle.

I know how to build a company. I do not know how to build the world my son has to live in.

I wake up at 3:47. Almost every morning.

I am on my right side, facing the wall and the bathroom. Doug is asleep behind me. My son is between us, on his back, turned sideways, a foot in my ribs, mouth a little open.

He still dreams. I do the math.

When he sleeps he gets this little smirk. I like to think he is somewhere good in there. Driving his cars. The fire trucks he loves. I do not know where he goes. I just know I want him to keep whatever puts that smirk there.

By then he has taken the whole middle of the bed. We have our corners. He has the rest.

We are not there yet. Him sleeping through the night on his own. Us letting him cry long enough to learn it. We are not there yet.

So he is here. We barely sleep. That’s the deal right now.

He takes up all the space. I want him to take up that much space out there too. Like nobody ever told him to shrink.

And then at 3:47, the fear.

Will my son be okay.

It is never just one thing.

There is the money. There is always the money. Whether there is enough. Whether it keeps coming. Whether I am still the one who makes sure it does. But money I can count. Money is not what has me awake at 3:47.

It is the other thing. The one I can’t count.

It took us years to get him here. The doctors, the search, the woman kind enough to carry him. We wanted him so badly we pulled him into the world on purpose. At 3:47, the wanting turns into a question. Whether it was for him, or for us. He was not there to be asked.

We are in our forties. If everything goes right, there are decades of him we will never see. That is the math.

My mother had it harder than me. Harder than I will ever know. I am not the first man to lie awake scared for his child, and I won’t be the last, and most of them had less than I have. I know that.

But she could tell me how the world worked. She knew where the walls were. She had hit most of them first. She could say, this is how you move, this is what to watch for, and it would still be true by the time I got there. It even got a little better. Good enough to hand down.

I can’t do that for him.

I think about the work I would point him toward. It might not be there. I think about what I would teach him, the things that worked for me. Some of what took me ten years to learn, a machine does now before lunch. Some of it, no machine can touch. I can no longer tell which is which. The rules change while we sleep. The meanness my mother taught me to watch for says its name out loud now.

I keep reaching for what to hand him, and my hand keeps closing on nothing.

The ones I would have leaned on are gone. The one I would have called first, I cannot call.

So I lie there with his foot in my ribs and I say it plain. It is not that the world is hard. I know hard. It is that the people before me could hand their kid something that still worked by the time they grew up. I can’t do that for him. His world is not built yet. And I have to get him ready for it anyway.

For ten years, the fear had somewhere to go.

That is what building was, mostly. Something scared me, I turned it into work. Money got tight, I made a plan. Something broke, I got on the phone. Every fear became a list. Every list became a morning. I was good at it.

The company sold. The drive did not. It went looking for the next thing to protect, the way it always has.

It found him.

He is not a company. I know that. The drive does not. It circles him all night, looking for something to fix, some plan that would hold, and it comes back with nothing.

All that engine. Nowhere to put it.

Somewhere in the dark, the song finds me. Regina Belle. “If I Could.”

My mother played it on weekends, cleaning or cooking, while my brother and I did our chores. She would go quiet when it came on. Something close to sad. I was a kid. I thought it was just a song she liked.

I know now what she was listening to. She had me at fifteen. My brother eleven months later. She came back for us at twenty-two and spent the rest of her life not quite believing she could do it. Even in her last months she would say it. You boys raised yourselves.

It was not true. It was never true. She believed it anyway.

She did her worrying standing up, at a stove, on a Saturday, with a song playing.

And we turned out okay. She knew that. I never got her to believe she was the reason.

Then I look at my son.

The smirk he sleeps with is hers. Her smile, on his face, in the dark. The curls are hers. Show him a photo of her as a teenager, a girl already my mother, and he says, Mama. Nobody taught him that.

My hand keeps closing on nothing.

Some things get through anyway.

He wakes up making little dinosaur noises. All nose, half growl, half song, going before his eyes are even open. It spills out of him and fills the whole room.

Sometimes it is not even six yet. We try to get him back down. He is up.

His whole world fits in a little box. The fire truck, the tow truck, the ambulance, the helicopter, a dozen small cars that pull back and go. He carries that box around the house like a man with somewhere to be. The dresser. His chair in our room. The dining room. Back up to his room. He dumps them out, turns the lid into a ramp, and talks to them, really talks to them, like they are old friends and he is catching them up.

He terrorizes the dog. Gets down on the floor and lets loose this shrieking gut laugh that has no bottom to it.

His hardest problem right now is that the potty interrupts the playing.

Then breakfast, the running around, the giggling, and a big hug at the door, and he is off to school, and I am off to my office.

That is his morning. Cars, the dog, a story he is telling.

For right now, that is exactly what it is supposed to be.

I know all of this from the dark.

He breathes. The house settles.

In a few hours he will wake up the way he always does. Making those noises before his eyes are even open, the little half-growl, half-song, the sound that fills the whole room and lands on me and means the day has started.

He does not know yet.

I do.

Here is the part I would say to someone still in it.

Builders turn fear into work. It is the thing we know how to do. Something scares us, we build against it. A system, a plan, a light in the yard.

I put up the lights because I wanted to see what was coming.

They lit the whole yard. They didn’t touch the thing I was afraid of.

That is what the building is for. Not to keep you safe. To show you where the dark starts anyway.

I still put up lights. I still replace the ones that burn out.

Still in the middle.
