Welcome Hudson Valley to this week’s edition of IN TOUCH, the award-winning public affairs and issues program that runs across Townsquare Media of the Hudson Valley radio stations.

This week’s guest is AWARENESS Inc. AWARENESS was started by Marie Shultis 17 years ago. AWARENESS started as a Mentoring Program as a result of an underage drinking party. The program was started to change the culture of substance use for future generations.

It was defined as a teen-initiated prevention program in Ulster County with adult guidance. It is aimed at giving middle school youth alternative activities provided by High School students who complete training created by Ulster County Mental Health Association to promote pro-social skills during recreational activities that constitute healthy alternatives to drug and alcohol use.

The Awareness Alcohol Program was formed in 2007 when teen Mentors reached out to their peers that were involved in a fatal drunk driving car crash on prom night that took the life of a friend. In 2009 AWARENESS expanded to cover substance use.

In the last 17 years, AWARENESS has worked diligently in the Hudson Valley to help save lives. They have won multiple Chronogrammy Awards for Youth Advocacy, including this year.

This episode is a bit different from other episodes. Today, you’re going to hear from many individuals speaking about their experience with AWARENESS. Marie Shultis will be popping in every once and a while, but the focus of this episode is the many voices that make up this program and give it life. There is a lot to get into, so we are just going to jump into all clips.

Hello Hudson Valley! You’re listening to In Touch, Townsquare Media of the Hudson Valley’s public affairs and issues program. As always, I’m your host, Conor Walsh! May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and if you’ve been listening all month long, you know that we’ve had some incredible conversations on the topic, ranging from drug abuse to disabilities and mental health illnesses, and how to seek counseling and resources for all of it. Wrapping up Mental Health Awareness Month, we have an excellent show for you today, one that I am sure will be able to help not just today’s youth, but the family unit as a whole.

With us today is Dr. Angela Glymph. Dr. Glymph is the CEO of Peer Health Exchange. Now, Peer Health Exchange provides young people with the support, resources, education opportunities and digital products needed to make positive healthy decisions. Dr. Glymph has accumulated 15 years of experience and expertise developing and managing health and educational equity programs, as well as evaluating health and educational outcomes of such programs. She is an accomplished business woman and is a published author. Dr. Glymph has written several books on the topic of mental health and related subjects. One thing I am excited to speak about today is Selfsee. selfsea is a peer-to-peer platform with mental health resources, support, and stories for young people from young people.

Memorial Day Weekend is next weekend, and The Hyde Park Education Foundation is hosting their Field of Honor Ceremony at the FDR Estate in Hyde Park. We discuss their upcoming event, along with their scholarship and grants programs, plus the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and how that ties into the Hyde Park community.

Field of Honor

Memorial Day, for many, is a day to get together with friends and family for a barbecue. The pools get unveiled, and it is almost like an unofficial start to summer. Let us not forget; however, that for many, this day is sacred. The whole point of Memorial Day is to mourn and celebrate the US military personnel who have died while serving in the armed forces. The Hyde Park Education Foundation is doing a phenomenal job to bring back a beautiful Memorial Day event that both celebrates our armed forces and unites us a community.

The event is the Field of Honor®; it's a display of 250+ full-sized American flags on the lawn in front of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Historic Site off of Route 9. The event is organized by the Hyde Park Education Foundation. Hyde Park had their first event in 2018 and then in 2019. Due to the pandemic, the event did not happen in 2020 and 2021. Now that it is back, Field of Honor® is excited to host hundreds of American flags flying in an inspiring, patriotic display honoring veterans, first responders, Hometown Heroes, and those we love and cherish. The event is free to the public, but donations are greatly appreciated. The weekend will have fun, family-friendly activities such as live local music and entertainment, story walks, and kids tents with crafts and games

All the money raised from Field of Honor® go towards the mission of the Hyde Park Education Foundation- provide funds for the students of Hyde Park Central School District (HPCSD), to enhance and encourage the opportunities and the well-being of the student of the HPCSD.

Members of the community are invited to sponsor a 3ft by 5ft American-made flag that will fly on an 8-foot flagpole out on the FDR Home Lawn.
