In With the Old Testament

In this episode, we are dealing with a very common theological/category mistake that people make concerning the Law. We often view it as tripartite, or having three parts: Moral, Ceremonial, and Civil. But is that right? Drs. Tim and Brian think not! Check out their discussion in this week's episode.

In a special episode this week, Tim and Brian get to sit down with a leading Old Testament scholar, Dr. Richard Averbeck, and discuss his latest book, The Old Testament Law for the Life of the Church. Dr. Averbeck is Emeritus Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Trinity International University, and his book explores how Christians can and should engage with the Old Testament Law. As Christians, we understand that God is Triune, but functionally how does that work in the Old Testament? When we see Israel speak and pray to their God, to whom are they speaking and praying? In this episode, Drs. Tim and Brian explore how we often assume the answer is God the Father, but that is not necessarily correct.

When people imagine the God of the Old Testament, they often think of an angry, vindictive deity who smites people left and right. Is that how God is portrayed in the Old Testament though? No! In this week's episode, Drs. Tim and Brian work to dispel that myth and illustrate how God is a God of justice, love, and mercy in both Testaments.

In the kick-off to season 2, the doctors outline some significant reasons why the Old Testament often attracts odd ideas. Looking at linguistics, history, and modernity, they go over the major causes of myth and outline the trajectory of this series.
