The difficulty for believers was the imperial worship demanded by Rome, in particular the emperor Domitian, at the time John was writing. Being polytheist, the Romans required worship of the emperor while worship of any and other gods was acceptable. Consequently, the Christians who remained faithful to God and would worship Him only were under the death penalty. Collectively, these believers were a suffering church who were commended for remaining faithful and encouraged to keep on doing what they had been doing even until death. They received no condemnation and with the message from Christ, reminded that God knew what they were going through and He was overseeing them through every difficulty until the end.

Overview: The church at Ephesus was highly commended and yet the Lord of the Church had a serious and solemn rebuke for them. They had -left their first love.- What was meant by -first love- was more than their having cooled in their feelings for Christ. The correction to remember, repent, and do implies actions which that kind of love does had diminished. This love they had let go of is rooted in the will and evidenced by the actions that follow. A change in actions results from a change in thinking which must be followed by repentance. Any church that has been in existence for several years and generations of believers is vulnerable and especially hear and heed this warning. This love in action will be evidenced as it is exercised in the relationships believers in the church have with one another. Taking a closer look with humility and sincerity will allow the Lord to make the corrections as needed beginning in the heart of each individual in the corporate body of the local church.

This church has maintained the proper balance of enduring with what should be put up with and with what should not be. Jesus knew they had done so for the sake of His Name without becoming weary. Yet even with the high commendation they had a critical area in need of correction. They were strongly condemned for having left their first love. What they were very busy doing had become more activity than adoration having let their heart become disengaged from what they were doing. This becomes symptomatic of those who are living the Christian life without being filled with and led by the Spirit. When activities and programs become what is central to the church it has become more of a business or social club than the body of Christ. Believers in the local church are to be living together as worshipers, witnesses, and workers learning and growing together by means of the Word and the Spirit. The correction was clear and concise. Christ called them to remember, repent, and do the deeds they done with that first love.

While God is giving opportunity for believers to grow and to witness to the unbeliever that they might be saved, this opportunity is at hand and will come to an end. He speaks of creation to the flood, the flood to the present, and the present to the re-creation of the new heavens and new earth. Despite what scoffers and naysayers continue to say, God has revealed what He has done, what He is doing, and what He will do. Judgment upon the unbeliever will come. Until then, during the time at hand, God is giving people time to repent from their sin and be saved from that coming judgment. Judgement denied is not judgment escaped. The denial is but a foolish effort to continue in sin and a life of rebellion while suppressing the truth God has revealed. God does not want the unbeliever to perish as He offers His rescue but He will not compromise His holiness nor His justice. The responsibility of those who have believed continues to be to pass on the Gospel of Jesus Christ through which God has saved, is saving, and will save until the time comes that He has determined for judgment to begin.

Such becomes a real threat when the Word of God becomes unappreciated, taken for granted, and even dull to believers. Carelessness with the Word will allow the false teachers a greater measure of success as they disguise themselves with the veneer of Christianity. The false teachers, being adept at mixing the Word in with their heresies, make bold, appealing, and popular promises that they will fail to keep having no real access to God's power. Their offer of help is typically geared toward fleshly, worldly interests of health and wealth while they cannot satisfy the spiritual needs and thirsts of believers for God and His Word. They will not only fail to keep their bogus promises but often result in people being 'disappointed' in God who failed to fulfill the promise of the false teacher. The warning sounded by Peter continues to need to be sounded loudly today.

God knows them, their efforts, and will bring them under judgment. Believers need to carefully examine all teachers they listen to and be mindful that tolerating false teaching will have an ungodly influence on life and godliness. Personality, appearance, and personal characteristics must not allowed to cause believers to drop their guard or tolerate the error in their teaching.
