Overview: How the Word of God, given to man, becomes known is a matter of approaching the Scriptures using normal literal, grammatical, historical principles in their reading. Not interpreting the Word of God literally for what it clearly and plainly says erodes the very foundation the church has been built upon. The same Spirit of God who moved men to write the Scriptures gives understanding to the reader so that what God meant by what He said, that He too superintended the writing and recording of, is knowable and understandable. By such means He has revealed and provided Truth necessary for man to have to be in the relationship with Him that He created man to have. Overview: The problem Paul was confronting was the influence of the unbelievers in the church masquerading as believers. They were corrupting the teaching of the Word and there by the very lives of the believers. In their attempt to discredit the truth being taught by Paul they criticized him and put him in a position of having to defend himself to the believers in the church. Paul in so doing refused to compare himself with others but boasted in what God had done and was doing in, and through, him. He gave them three reasons why they should hear him out in regard to such foolishness of having to defend himself. One, he did so because he was zealous and jealous for their spiritual protection. Two, the false teaching they were being receptive to was a corruption of the truth and turning them away from Christ. And three, he was not inferior to the self-proclaimed apostles who were leading astray having been appointed as an apostle by God. His goal was for their rescue and protection from the attacks which were ultimately from the devil through the false teachers and their followers.

Overview: External and outward appearances can be misconstrued, misrepresented, and presented in such a way as to raise doubt or accusations against someone's authority. Such was the situation faced by the apostle Paul despite having been divinely appointed as an apostle by God with God-given authority and leadership was being criticized by false teachers. When actual ministry cannot be legitimately criticized, criticism is often levied against the person, their personality, and preferences. The false teachers attacking Paul had no objective standard for evaluating their lives and their teaching so they commended themselves and one another while finding fault with Paul whose standard was the Word of God. Conflicts in the church came down to the issue of authority and leadership and the source by which they had been appointed. Ultimately behind the conflicts is the devil and his influence through those who are false converts trying to spread their influence in the church and his scheme continues through the professing church to this day.
