Looks like the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree! You're like siblings! You really are your father’s child! Most of us have heard these lines from various people. Some relatives and friends may have once called us out for possessing traits that resemble what our parents have. For some, it’s a compliment, but for some not so much. It’s funny how we see or don’t see what other people see in us. Just like how MJ, learned the true meaning of what it means to be her father's daughter, which she chronicles in her personal essay, “Anak ka talaga ng tatay mo.” MJ's essay was first published on February 4, 2021. Today, she joins Young Blood to talk about how she dealt with the loss of a loved one, and how she realized that she somehow resembled her father.   MJ is no daddy’s girl, but she loves her father just the same and hopes to immortalize him through her essay. When she is not writing, you can find her fantasizing about it while reading manga, watching Asian series, or cooking. Currently, she is a frustrated BA Communication Arts student at UP Los Baños.

It's a known fact that we Filipinos are a mixture of various races. Our ethnicity is a product of various races being molded together. As true as this fact is, some members of our society still view half-Filipino citizens as aliens to our land.  The worst part is, they actually get discriminated by full-blooded Filipinos. Just like what this week's writer Sharwin Tee experienced back then. Biologically, he may be a half-Chinese and half-Filipino, but he is definitely not a "check-in". Remember that scene in the Disney Film High School Musical where they sang the song "Stick to the status quo?" The message of the song was basically about sticking to what you were labeled as, and not doing things outside of that box you've been packaged in, which can be detrimental to one's growth as a person. Our lives have been disrupted by this pandemic, and have changed the way we lives. Many things shifted online, plans were cancelled, and daily routines were altered. It's especially difficult for those who've stuck with a habit of waking up early for a specific activity when almost everything was cancelled, which caused us to somewhat stray from what used-to-be our normal routine. Edward Maguindayao writes about that in his essay, "Waking up at 7AM." It was published last  February 02, 2021. Magin first left his hometown, Iloilo, when he attended college at the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU). After graduating two years ago, he left for Europe for his Masters. With the increased distance and time zone difference, not to mention, travel restrictions since March 2020, Magin's only way of keeping in touch with family is through social media and cooking.
