Last night was the Met Gala, so today I’ve got a little history lesson for ya (and the news).

Spirit Airlines is gone, 17,000 people lost their jobs overnight, and the abortion pill drama is back in the courts. Also, a woman just made history at the Kentucky Derby, and California billionaires are losing their minds over a 5% tax. You know, normal Monday stuff.

For the main course: Everyone watches the Met Gala for the looks, but barely anyone knows how it started. Well, I do! And you will too. Spoiler: it started as a $50 dinner with no theme, no carpet, and absolutely zero celebrities. A woman named Eleanor Lambert threw a party to save a museum department that was about to go broke. That was 1948.

Then Diana Vreeland showed up and started spraying Chanel No. 5 through the air vents. Then Anna Wintour took over and banned parsley.

And now it costs $100,000 just to get in the door.

This week I found out Halloween has a sister. 🧙‍♀️ A twin depending on how you look at it. She's been here the whoooole time. She just lives in April instead of October.

But first, I break down some of the news. Elon got summoned to Paris and didn't show up. Apple and Google are running ads for apps that digitally undress women. MrBeast's company is being sued by a former employee who took work calls from her hospital bed while in active labor. An Amazon worker died on a warehouse floor in Oregon and coworkers were told to turn around and get back to work. Someone tried to shoot up the White House Correspondents' Dinner. OpenAI knew a mass shooter was planning something eight months in advance and didn't tell a soul. And Forbes put a betting widget inside an article about eight murdered children. 

Then we get a little witchy. April 30th is Walpurgis Night. Halloween's twin who sits directly opposite on the calendar. She’s got the same thinning veil, same energy, same chaos. Witches have been flying to a mountain in Germany for this for centuries. Get your brooms ready. 🧹 Come, we fly!

Also the flying ointment ingredients are truly something else. I’ve got the recipe, but you have to promise you won’t make it at home.

This week I’m keeping it light. Well. Mostly.

Tim Cook is out at Apple, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame dropped its 2026 class, and 1,000 activists showed up to a Wisconsin beagle research facility and got met with tear gas and rubber bullets. Also, the Midwest got absolutely hammered by tornadoes this week, which got me thinking about tornado sirens, which led me down a rabbit hole (as anything will).

Because those tornado sirens? They were invented for bombs. Not tornadoes. Bombs.

And that's kind of the whole vibe of today's episode. Because Lysol used to be marketed as birth control. The chainsaw was invented for childbirth. Rogaine is a blood pressure medication that accidentally grows hair. And cotton candy was invented by a dentist. Two dentists, actually. I'll explain.

Things are not what they seem. Especially the stuff under your sink.

This week on [indistinct chatter], we're still in Women's History Month and I'm diving into something that has genuinely been making me angry the more I researched it... the laws that have historically applied to women and not men, and the ones that still do today.

I start with the news, including the ongoing escalation of the Iran conflict and what it actually means for your wallet, a meningitis outbreak in the UK worth keeping an eye on, the Bachelorette getting pulled before it even aired, and a newly designed dime that's already causing controversy. Plus a few stories I think deserved more attention than they got.

Then we get into the main episode. I'm talking about coverture. The legal doctrine that erased women's identities entirely upon marriage and tracing how its logic never really went away. From women being excluded from jury duty to the Head and Master laws that let husbands sell the family home without their wives knowing, to marital rape not being a crime in all 50 states until 1993. Yes, 1993.

Then we get into the stuff that's happening right now. The pink tax and the tampon tax. 18+ states still classify period products as luxury items. The gender pay gap that has actually widened for the second consecutive year. And reproductive rights, not just abortion, but the entire system of medical decision-making that has historically excluded women from clinical trials, gotten our dosages wrong, and put the people with the least personal stake in charge of the most personal decisions.

Coverture may be gone. But its fingerprints are everywhere.

I'm talking about Elizabeth Magie, who invented Monopoly as a political statement against greed and watched a man sell it as his own invention and become a millionaire. Hedy Lamarr, Hollywood star and co-inventor of the technology that laid the foundation for WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Mary Anderson, who invented the windshield wiper and was told it had no practical value. And Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, who figured out what stars are actually made of, was pressured to call herself wrong, and watched her advisor publish the same findings four years later and get all the credit.

The Matilda Effect is real, it's a pattern, and once you see it you can't unsee it.

I talk about Rosalind Franklin, whose DNA research helped reveal the double helix but was credited to just men. Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematician whose calculations helped put astronauts into orbit and bring them home safely. And Virginia Hall, the World War II spy with a prosthetic leg who built resistance networks in Nazi-occupied France and became one of the most dangerous Allied agents in Europe.

Plus, I run through some everyday inventions you probably didn’t know were created by women. From windshield wipers to chocolate chip cookies to the technology that laid the groundwork for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
