Ashes to Ashes: What will you leave when your time comes?

Let’s not forget Veteran’s Day, Nov 11. Jan and I recently visited DC, and I took this video. So I am showing this video, even though it’s more appropriate for Memorial Day, in May. Any way you look at it, and at any time, let’s always remember those who make sacrifices that most of us are not prepared to make.

If you study history, any history, you get pulled in deeper and deeper. In things that matter, there are no easy answers that explain everything. If it all makes sense to you, you might not be thinking hard enough. Or you may not know enough.

I didn’t want to go to Vietnam, few people wanted to. But some went anyway, either out of a sense of duty, or because they were drafted. I was almost drafted, but not quite.

I was off the hook, but thousands were not. I know that totalitarian aggression from the Soviet Union and China had to be stopped. But at what price, and who pays it?

Perhaps more than anything, who we are is shaped by who we have encountered. Mostly it’s the people we live with and near to.

But there are those who are in and out of our lives in minutes. And sometimes they count for a lot…

Why do we discriminate based on age? Why is it acceptable? You know what happens if you discriminate based on race (depending on the race you discriminate against). You get cancelled. Same for gender.

But age discrimination? Have at it. Millennials ridicule Boomers, Boomers ridicule Gen Z, and so forth. No problem. The funny thing is, a person’s age is, well, an accident of birth. We have no more control over that than the color of our skin. So why is it OK to criticize a person for their age? What’s the point?

Slavery has existed for as long as ‘civilized’ man has existed. Every race has enslaved and been enslaved. How much of slavery do you know, besides the southern plantation slavery of the early USA?

In this video I am reading from a book written by Olaudah Equiano in1789. Equianao had been kidnapped into slavery at the age of 11. He later was able to buy his freedom.

I’ve been a teacher, a student, an employee, an employer, a landlord and a tenant.

The more of these that you’ve been, the greater your perspective. Teachers are woefully lacking in perspective regarding what makes a good, desirable employee.

If they don’t know what employers are really seeking in an employee, they are not likely to do an effective job of preparing students to become employees.

Listen, and find out.
