We explore a couple 100 year cycles to move from Enlightenment ideas to practical products cheap and reliable enough for a large market to use.

We explore first sewing machines and then electricity, leading to the telegraph.   

I discuss how I had to change my mind about the way scientists and inventors moved easily between the Enlightenment, the Industrial Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution.   At first I overlooked their importance, but eventually came to see their significance, illustrated here by Nicholson.

And there is also the way the age old salt industry, after some advances in Chemistry, grew into a new chemical industry, in Britain based on some French discoveries.  As usual FRance was not able to convert their science into industry.
