INESC TEC Science Bits #10 – Smart Grids

Listen Later

INESC TEC Science Bits is a podcast, produced by INESC TEC and Engenharia Rádio, which aims to shed a light on the latest trends in science and technology, trying to dive deeper in each subject with the help of INESC TEC experts and researchers.

INESC TEC has a vast experience (more than 25 years) in the energy field, from the first scientific research project on distribution networks (during the 1990s), until the present moment, where smart grids are one of the main elements in the agenda for the future.

The Laboratory of Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles, part of INESC TEC, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. This internationally acknowledged laboratory takes science-based innovation to important companies in the energy market, which work in different dimensions of the sector. In addition, it aims to make society aware of issues related to energy, such as energy efficiency, smart grids or renewable energy sources.

These facilities welcome PhD and MSC students and researchers, both national and foreign, who go through the complete process of idea development, discussion with peers, knowledge and prototype development, implementation and testing. Companies and other public institutions focusing on smart grids can also benefit from this infrastructure.

To talk about the history and work of this laboratory, we invited Miguel Miranda and Luís Seca, researchers from the INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems.

Miguel Miranda

Luís Miguel Miranda is researcher on power electronic converters mainly with application in smart grids and energy storage systems. He is currently responsible for the Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles Laboratory (SGEVL) of INESC TEC. His main domains of research are related with electric vehicle charging, hardware design and prototyping of electric and electronic equipment and testing of distributed energy resources using power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL). He holds an international patent related to matrix converters modulation and is author or co-author of several conference and journal papers.

Luís Seca

Luís Seca is a Senior Researcher in the Center for Power and Energy and member of the Board of INESC TEC, a private R&D institution in Portugal, Luís Seca current research interests focus on the integration of distributed energy resources (renewable, EV, Storage, etc.) in distribution systems, dynamic stability in isolated systems and smart grids.
