Informal traders in Marabastad are pushing back against the City of Tshwane after the closure of the Marabastad Retail Market. The City, led by Mayor Nasiphi Moya and MMC Sarah Mabotsa, shut down the market citing non-compliance with health, safety, and trading by-laws. Traders, however, argue the decision has devastated livelihoods and accuse the City of failing to consult them before taking action. The DA has also raised concerns, warning that the closure threatens jobs, investor confidence, and the economic lifeline of many residents. Meanwhile, a court order now compels traders to submit permit applications and comply with safety regulations before operations can resume.
