Autism and Parenting

Information Organization – Order and Patterns

Listen Later

Autistic people have attention to detail and an inability to generalize makes them more objective toward their perception of the world and less prone to forming a bias. However, it also makes all sorts of new experiences incredibly complex, therefore they love to follow a rigid daily routine to limit their sensory input.
They have a fascination with logic. They naturally look for patterns that bring logic into this world. Sometimes they also bring order to their own behavior to the extent of moving their body. When structured patterns are broken, they get upset; they freak out when someone counts to 8 but doesn’t continue to 10. This is called - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (#OCD).
Parents and caregivers must find out ways that they do not add confusion. For example, ‘Hi’ and ‘Bye’ have similar hand gestures, this will certainly confuse an Autistic kid in terms of information organization.
