Lunar halo in the night sky may signal approaching wet weather in Britain
Britons may sometimes see a pale, luminous ring around the moon known as a lunar halo, which can indicate an approaching weather front. Astronomy expert Alan Jones of 365 Astronomy says the halo forms when moonlight refracts through tiny ice crystals in high cirrus clouds, bending light at about 22 degrees to create the circle. These halos often appear 12 to 36 hours before rain, snow, or sleet, though not every sighting leads to a storm, and observers are advised to check forecasts. Best viewing conditions include a bright, near-full moon, thin high cloud, low light pollution, and steady smartphone settings such as night mode or long exposure.
