In this episode of Innovate at UL, we meet with Dr Russell Greaney is the Associate Director of Core Development at Aerogen in Galway. He discusses the valuable collaborations between Aerogen and the University of Limerick (UL). This partnership played a key role in helping Aerogen build in-house expertise in aerosol drug delivery. UL provided important research input and access to specialised knowledge at a critical time, and Aerogen has since taken that foundation and expanded and advanced the technology. The result is the Solo II nebuliser—now recognised globally and proven to be significantly more efficient than its closest competitor. Russell highlights how academic collaborations can serve as an important stepping stone in addressing technical hurdles and accelerating innovation. In this episode of Innovate at UL, we meet with Emma Morgan, CFO of Serosep Ltd, who discusses its collaboration with the University of Limerick (UL), which began several years ago. Serosep, a manufacturer of medical diagnostic kits, initially hesitated due to intellectual property (IP) concerns, but later realised the benefits and embraced UL's expertise. Key projects included improving freeze-drying processes and reducing cycle time from 48 to 24 hours. Funding from Enterprise Ireland and Research Ireland (formerly SFI) supported these initiatives. Emma emphasises the importance of building relationships and managing budgets and timelines. Future plans include continued collaboration to stay innovative and dynamic.

In this episode of Innovate at UL, we meet with Dr Tara Dalton, a researcher at the University of Limerick, who co-founded the spin-out company Stokes Bio Ltd. Stokes Bio was sold to Life Technologies for $44 million in 2010, marking one of the largest university spin-out acquisitions in the Irish State's history.  Tara is currently the CEO of her latest spinout, Altratech. Her research interest is in the development of microfluidic devices for biological assays. She has graduated 20 PhD students, published over 100 refereed papers, and has over 50 granted patents and applications.  

 As a serial entrepreneur who created and launched business ventures, often after selling or stepping away from previous ones, her entrepreneurial journey showcases her adaptability, resilience, and ability to innovate in various industries. Entrepreneurs like her are often involved in multiple projects and demonstrate the ability to identify new opportunities, secure funding, and scale businesses to success.

In this episode of Innovate at UL, we speak with Fionn Barron, co-founder and Chief Customer Officer of Tracworx, a Limerick-based technology company transforming supply chain asset management. Founded in 2016 by three University of Limerick students - Chris Kelly, Fionn Barron, and Eoin O'Brien.  

Tracworx helps businesses manage their assets throughout the supply chain by providing digital infrastructure and real-time tracking data. 

Fionn shares the fascinating evolution of Tracworx, including how the team made the critical decision to pivot away from their original business model during the COVID-19 pandemic. He reflects on the lessons learned, how listening to market feedback reshaped their vision, and why that pivot ultimately unlocked greater opportunities and long-term impact. 

We also explore the support they received from the startup ecosystem in Limerick, the value of being embedded in a university innovation centre, and the broader implications of digital transformation in logistics and packaging.
