Innovative Practices Using Case Studies

Listen Later

Case studies are true stories, "reality bites," that educators employ to bridge the gap between theory and practice. They also serve to create new dynamics in the classroom by breaking down the traditional role of professors -- they become facilitators of a more student-centered learning process.

This is the first session of the "Case Studies and Other Classroom Reality Shows" series designed to explore the case study method and strengthen the use of these powerful pedagogical tools.

This session introduces the series and highlight current practices by Baruch professors who use cases and other similar artifacts to involve students in the analysis of situations related to professional practice.

John Casey, Professor at SPA, introduces the series and moderates the event. Associate Provost Dennis Slavin makes the welcoming remarks. David Birdsell, Dean of SPA, talks about the challenges in using cases and what it means for innovation in case teaching practice. Su Han Chan, Professor of Real Estate, shares her experience in "Using Case studies in real estate and finance courses." Will Millhiser, Professor of Management, presents "Teaching with cases."

The event takes place on September 22, 2009, at the Baruch College Vertical Campus, Room 14-270.
