I know where every dollar goes. I could tell you to the cent what I’ve spent for the last five years. Tonight I ran a different kind of audit, one I’ve been avoiding. The numbers weren’t what I expected. Journal alongside every entry in the InscribedRite app at inscribedrite.com, and find the companion journals at payhip.com/TelluRite.

I walked through the house tonight and really looked at it. The kids’ trophies, the growth chart on the pantry door, a calendar built around schedules for people who don’t live here anymore. In today’s entry, I realize my whole environment points backward to who I used to be, and nothing in it points toward who I’m becoming. Maybe I start with one room.

Day 16: The Upgrade Mindset
I got the offer. The safe one. Good company, a title my parents can brag about, and I’ve been about to sign it for four days. There’s a smaller, scarier thing that’s actually mine. In today’s entry, I notice I make every decision like someone hoping not to lose, and I ask what I’d do next if I actually believed I deserved a big life, not just a safe one.

I could do my job in my sleep. That’s not a brag. It’s the problem. I hit every number and haven’t been challenged in four years, and I’ve been calling coasting a career. In today’s entry, I write down what I will no longer accept, and I learn that a standard is just a line you draw in advance so you already know your answer when comfort asks you to cross it.

I did the thing. It’s small. For two years I’ve been about to start, tabs open, domains bought and expired, always working on the idea of it. Today I pressed the button and my hands were shaking. In today’s entry, I catch the old voice trying to tell me it doesn’t count, and I decide that tonight, it counts.

I was the first in my family to go to college, and I chose the degree that made everybody exhale. There was a rule I grew up inside that nobody ever wrote down: people like us don’t get to want the risky thing. In today’s entry, I realize I’ve been honoring someone else’s fear like it was love, and I write a new rule in its place.

I signed off on something at work today that I didn’t believe in. Again. I sat in the driveway with the engine off and made myself ask whether this ache is growth or something else. In today’s entry, I learn to tell the difference between the discomfort of stretching and the dishonor of stepping over a line I used to hold, and how you can be perfectly stable and slowly ashamed at the same time.

There’s something I’ve needed to say to my father for eleven years. I’ve had the words ready at Thanksgiving, on his birthday, in the driveway with the engine ticking. Every time, I ask him how the truck’s running instead. In today’s entry, I stop calling my silence respect, admit it’s fear, and write the words down so they exist somewhere outside my chest.

I laughed too loud at dinner and felt him look at me. He didn’t say anything. He never does. I just got quiet, the way I always do. In today’s entry, I trace how I sanded down every edge of myself to fit a shape that wouldn’t ruffle him, called it compromise, and forgot my own size. For one second before I shrank tonight, that laugh felt like mine.

Mama had a bad night, so I had a bad night. That sentence has been true for four years. I love my mother, and I would choose her again, but tonight I finally named what’s underneath the love. In today’s entry, I look at the help I keep refusing, the life I keep in a drawer, and why a boundary isn’t a wall. It’s a bridge I can cross without disappearing.
