Inside Quizzing

Gryphon and Scott discuss what a hypothetical "juniors" program might look like and if it would be a positive return on investment. Gryphon provides a CBQZ update and PNW Quizzing season status update. Then the dynamic duo invest the majority of the episode talking about the history and future of Bible Quizzing. Gryphon explains the theory of the "ages" of Quizzing. Scott walks through reasons why the Second Age of Quizzing is and has been in decline. And Gryphon talks about what the Third Age of Quizzing could and should look like if we want to grow and sustain Quizzing for decades to come. Gryphon and Scott dive into Quizzing Theoretical Physics (again) by probing the extra-rule-book-ian concept of "quoting" versus "answering" when a quizzer is responding to a question. Far from staying focused on that initiating topic, the dynamic duo dig into related philosophical questions like, "Are we OK with poorly-written rules that are tribally maintained in a consistent and good way?" Although tribal custom may work in some cases, tribal custom is fraught with long-term costs to the health of Quizzing. Gryphon and Scott dive into the theoretical, asking if Quizzing wisdom for Quizzers is better or more commonly received and integrated by experience versus instruction. Some things are better learned by doing, while others are easier learned from coaches and captains. The dynamic duo also discuss ideal international program organization and its impacts on optimizing district-level Quizzing outcomes. Gryphon and Scott discuss everything you've ever wanted to know about situation questions (SITs) but were too afraid to ask. What are all the rules around SITs and their implications? What are the best SIT study habits? To what degree is it valuable to specialize in SITs, and how would you do that if you wanted to? Also, the dynamic duo announce some new rule book versions and PNWQuizzing.org resources and next season proposed plans. In this episode, Gryphon and Scott discuss a cluster of financial transparency questions, drawing from their own experiences and (possibly flawed and certainly incomplete) memories of the past and their own understanding of the current state of Quizzingdom. The dynamic duo takes umbrage at some points. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, and those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The goal here is to shine light on our problems to inspire future leaders to do better. As always, email questions and comments to [email protected] and follow us on Twitter: @InsideQuizzing. Gryphon and Scott read and discuss an email from a listener covering our previous discussions on trying to filter or limit the negative impact a berserk quizzer at Internationals and similar competitive levels. They also cover a Great West Invitational recap, a District Championships update (now less than 2 weeks away at Double K in Easton, WA), and a very special announcement: CBQZ now offers Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope reference materials. Gryphon and Scott discuss the idea that quizzers can be divided up into various types, often times with high levels of complexity and across multiple type categories. The dynamic duo discuss these categories and how coaches can best coach these different types of quizzers. Categories include: older versus younger sibling quizzers, the "I'm just here for the food" quizzer, quizzers with great material knowledge but are super-cautious, quizzers with poor material knowledge and who throw caution to the wind, and quizzers who are brand new to quizzing. Gryphon and Scott discuss how college basketball officiating might have parallels to officiating Bible Quizzing.

Since Gryphon is only vaguely aware of college basketball, Scott leads the discussion, citing many examples of officiating problems he witnessed from a long weekend watching various games. Gryphon and Scott, in an effort to imagine what Quizzing might be like if we were to recreate it anew, work through some thought experiments to help determine what may be our shared first principles of Bible Quizzing. Quizzing must be fun and engaging. We need to remove inconsistent and error-prone activity because it's unfair, and what is unfair is anti-mission. And Quizzing needs to grow. Gryphon and Scott discuss the initiation of the first ever Rule Book Committee. The dynamic duo discuss the formation of the committee, where it's charter comes from, how it basically works, and other particulars. But the really exciting bits are all about how everyone from across the whole of Quizzingdom can participate in the process as equals in a transparent collaboration of ideas. Gryphon and Scott also discuss some related philosophies around why the rule book is important, and they discuss some specific items on the Rule Book Committee's list of topics to resolve.
