  • Best of the Inside the SPHL Podcast: James Spann

Happy holidays from everyone at The Sin Bin! While we are away enjoying the holidays with our families, we are leaving you two of our best podcasts from 2018 as gifts under the digital tree!

In the first edition of the Best of the Inside the SPHL Podcast, Matthew Harding, Mike Campos, and Dana Barker are joined by legendary Birmingham TV meteorologist James Spann!

Spann is the Chief Meteorologist at ABC 33/40 in Birmingham, Alabama and has been there since the station opened its doors 24 years ago. All told, Spann has been in the television weather business for over 40 years.

In 2012, he was awarded the “Broadcaster of the Year” award by the National Weather Association for his “passionate dedication to serving Central Alabama residents with critical weather information for over 30 years, especially during the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak.”

One year later, he received the “Award for Broadcast Meteorology” from the American Meteorological Society for his “tireless efforts to advance the public’s awareness of and engagement in the science of meteorology, particularly in severe weather forecasting and response.”

Mr. Spann is also a two-time Emmy award winner and was one of the first television meteorologists to earn the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation by the American Meteorological Society and the host of the Weatherbrains podcast.

In this best of episode, the guys talked with James about:

    * April 27, 2011 Tornado Outbreak, how that affected James and his staff
    * Improvements in meteorology since April 27, 2011
    * TV stations issuing phony "Weather Alert Days" and how it confuses the warning process
    * How to grow and handle social media trolls, haters and know-it-alls
    * Hurricane Florence (which, at the time, was nearing the North Carolina coast)
    * Sporting events and weather warnings

    …and more!

  • Inside the SPHL Podcast S3 E5 – After Further Review

Arguments aplenty in the fifth episode of our third season of the mostly harmless Inside the SPHL Podcast! Recorded on November 13th, Campos and Harding go it alone and agree on absolutely nothing.

With the exception being the universal agreement of the Macon Mayhem being the top team in the SPHL right now.

    In tonight's episode:

    * We complain about the sudden (and early) arrival of winter, leading Campos to an early disclosure of our Walmart Item of the Week - sure to keep you warm with a beastly attitude.

For once... Campos actually bought this. We have proof.

    * More occurrences heightening the need of video review across pro hockey, while Harding updates us on what the ECHL is using to review calls on the ice.

From Saturday night's Peoria/Fayetteville game... Did the shot beat the buzzer?

    https://thesinbin.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/2018-11-03-031.mp4

From Saturday night's Quad City/Birmingham game... The overturned goal.

    https://thesinbin.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/2018-11-03-023.mp4

    * We break down the rest of the week's action and focus on the first marquee matchup of the 2018-19 season between Macon and Huntsville on Sunday afternoon.
    * Campos names his three stars of the past week: Birmingham's Justin Larson, Roanoke's Colin Murray, and Peoria's Alec Hagaman.
    * We release this week's results of the PowerFive staff poll, with a unanimous decision atop the chart.

Next week, we'll air our show on a special date. At 8 pm CT on Monday, November 19th, we welcome back Peoria Rivermen Head Coach Jean-Guy Trudel to The Sin Bin! You will not want to miss this! We'll be on Facebook Live on The Sin Bin SPHL Facebook Page.
