  • #044 Ian Thorpe

Brett speaks with swimming prodigy, Ian Thorpe!

    What makes a champion?

What is it like being a World Champion at 15 years old?
The level of expectation and pressure leading into the Sydney Olympics. Breaking his ankle 12 months out.
Being accused of doping by Germany's Head Coach and then destroying the 200 Free World Record by over a second. This took place at the FINA World Cup Berlin stop in 2000.
Losing the 200 Free to Pieter van den Hoogenband in Sydney.
The theory behind Doug Frost's training program. "Flog the athlete."
3000 for time. 30:46 or 30:16? Followed by 30x100's heart rate set.
    "I owned being World Champion."
The full length, custom black suit made out of lycra.
    Adidas.
Ripping multiple suits right before the 4x100 Free Relay. Klim breaking the World Record on the lead off. Catching Gary Hall Jr.
Having international pop-star status. Specifically in Japan. Turning down a record deal.
Craig Stevens giving up his 400 Free spot in Athens "because of what it does for the team."
The Swimming Race of the Century: Michael Phelps vs. Pieter van den Hoogenband, vs. Ian Thorpe
No privacy in training. Making the decision to retire.
Wishing Michael Phelps Was A Little Bit Older
Everyone is swimming the 200 Free wrong.

  • #042 Alice Tait

Brett speaks with Alice Tait formerly known as Alice Mills!

    They talk about...

Living in Brisbane, Australia with her husband British swimmer Gregor Tait and their two young boys.

Her competitive nature begins in her childhood. "Always had to finish first. Always had to get up the stairs first."

Swimming with Shannon Rollason and Jodie Henry

Speed Conditioning -- doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl it should be the same.

Shannon would "reverse cycle" their program. Rather than starting with long endurance work like everyone else, they would start by swimming fast. Every season would start with speed.

Most all speed work done off the blocks.

    Tim Garrison.

    Recovery.

    Test set: 6x50's on 2:00

    Summer of 2005: averaged 25.7

How 8x200 IM's gave her confidence at a young age.

Height and Weight throughout her career. Strength to weight ratio was excellent.

    Her friendship with Libby Trickett.

18 years old. Lead off swimmer. First Olympics. First day. First swim. World Record. Gold Medal. This is easy!

    Sarah Ryan. Petria Thomas.

Coming together to do quality sets off the blocks doing relay exchanges together in practice.

Did winning Olympic gold change your life?

Her son finding her medals. Watching old footage with your kids. Gregor Tait, her husband, was a high level Scottish swimmer.

Going through puberty. Losing self confidence.

    Sports psychology.

Swimming Australia these days. "The rebuild phase is done now."

Missing the team by just a couple tenths. "I really wanted to be a 3-time Olympian."

    Glenn Baker.

    Retiring mid-session.

    Becoming a nurse.

    Corona virus in Australia.

Kieren's 1500 at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games had a massive impact on Brett (and every other Australian on planet Earth).
He's back on the board of Swimming Australia. Been with NAB for over a decade.
Life after sport is never easy.
Developing mental toughness. Getting coached by John Carew.
Kieren wouldn't exactly call himself an athlete. Football, cricket, soccer weren't for him.

  • #039 John Steffensen

John Steffensen isn't a swimmer but he did shape Brett's coaching philosophy.

They talk about how a swimmer and a runner became friends.

How he trained as a 200/400 meter runner. Winning Silver on the 4x100 Relay at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

The similarities between a 200 Freestyle and the 400m.

    Doping.

Training 100% for 9 months, party for 2.

Becoming close friends with Usain Bolt. What he's best at. Another chicken nugget story.

    John's competitive mentality.

"If you're not setting a personal best at the Games, you messed up!"

Driving home with Usain after he ripped his hamstring in 2014.

    The Last Dance.

    And much, much more.
