Insight Storytelling Hour

Listen Later

Insight is devoting the hour to storytelling and letting CapRadio colleagues tell personal stories of the meaning of family, how that meaning can evolve, and the conversations and memories that come up during the holiday season.

Laura and Victor

You’re going to get to know some of the people at CapRadio a little better this hour. As we head into the holidays, Insight has been having sideline conversations about our families, traditions, and just some wacky stories that capture how unique and varied our experiences are. It’s been fun learning about what the holidays mean and don’t mean from one person to the next. So, we thought to share these stories with our listeners and perhaps it’ll spark some personal memories to share with loved ones. We start with CapRadio’s new Midday Host, Laura West, and Insight Assistant Producer, Victor Corral Martinez about how being mixed race, opens up a pretty wide palate for a Thanksgiving feast.

Emily

We’re devoting the hour to a little bit of storytelling from our CapRadio colleagues sharing some fun, wacky and meaningful stories about the memories that shape their definition of family. When CapRadio Data Reporter Emily Zentner thinks of Thanksgiving, her fondest memories are tied to her late Aunt Teri and a promise about “minced pie” that Emily has kept in the years since her aunt’s passing.

Srishti

American traditions can come with some learning curves for immigrants. CapRadio Sacramento Education Reporter Srishti Prabha knows that all too well. Srishti’s family immigrated from India with a new language, culture, and way of life. Insight sat down with Srishti about how they and their family adopted holidays like Thanksgiving while planting their roots.

Andrew Garcia

The holidays can become tough when the nucleus of a family passes on. Especially the first get-together without them because it sets into motion a bittersweet new chapter. Their absence is powerful but doesn’t have to be silent. CapRadio Weekend Host Andrew Garcia sat down with his family to remember the last holiday trip with their grandfather.

Andrew Nixon

We're wrapping up a storytelling hour with the person who sparked the idea in the first place. Andrew Nixon is CapRadio's Multimedia Journalist, and a couple of months ago, he stopped by Insight host Vicki Gonzalez's desk, wanting to share a pretty wacky but thoroughly entertaining story about his dad Bert and Uncle George. It's a story that doesn't really have a defined place for radio. But we thought about how this story, although unique to Andrew's family, kind of encapsulates how we can go down a rabbit hole of storytelling and learning about a loved one's past choices that may feel like they're unrecognizable.
