In Jerusalem during the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah), Jesus makes his most controversial statement yet. John 10:22-42.

The conversation between Jesus and the Pharisees begun in Chapter 9 continues. They've demanded to know who he is to do the things he does. He responds, "I am the Good Shepherd" a phrase more loaded with prophetic implications than we might imagine. John 10:1-21.

After proclaiming himself to be the light of the world, Jesus gives a fitting sign of his identity: he heals a man of blindness who had been born that way. The once-blind-now-seeing man encounters surprising blowback. John 9

The discussion and debate from Chapter 7 moves from the open court of the Temple a little further in, to the Treasury. The topic shifts from Jesus' proclamation of the gospel to what he has to say about himself--leading to an explosive climax. John 8:12-59.

On the last, great day of the feast Jesus publicly proclaims fulfillment of the prophets' promise of Living Water, and expounds on the gift of the Holy Spirit. John 7:32-52

Jesus attends the Feast of Tabernacles privately, and his public absence prompts widespread conversation about him. When he emerges to teach toward the end of the week, the divergent opinions are brought into the open as well--and he refutes them all. John 7:1-31.

With Passover at hand, Jesus admonishes his seekers to pursue the bread of life. He then tells them, "I am the bread of life." Then their doubts and questions arise. John 6:22-72.

All the Gospels depict the miracle of the feeding of the 5000, but only John connects it temporally and thematically to the Passover. And John is one of three evangelists who tell of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee to his disciples, but again he implies a connection to the Exodus. John 6:1-21.

Jesus singled out a man at the Pool of Bethesda who suffered from lameness, healed him, and stirred up a huge Sabbath controversy in the process— something familiar to us from the Synoptic Gospels, but here in John, Jesus takes it to a new level. John 5.

This is a chapter full of surprises: Jesus' astonishing revelation to a most unlikely person, the reception in Samaria, and his cool response to a Herodian official's request for his child's healing. John 4.
