David O’Reilly is a highly talented artist having performed internationally in theatre, television and radio. His theatre performances include Greece, the Book of Mormon, Everyone’s talking about Jamie and most recently he starred in ‘Buff’, receiving outstanding solo performance reviews. He has appeared on TV shows such as Doctors for the BBC, ITV’s show Benidorm and Better Things on Hulu. 

And for our Irish listeners, David is currently the showbiz correspondent for the Elaine show and a contributor on 2 FM radio.

Behind the showbiz and stage lights we ask David what it really took to get to where he is now?

• From being bullied ‘tremendously’ at primary school, he approached secondary school with ‘a coat of armour’ suppressing his big personality to go unnoticed. 

• From being a ‘good Catholic’ boy, in a heavily religious Ireland, “it took me longer to come out as gay because of Catholic guilt”.

• From a breakdown in 2016 due to crippling anxiety and undiagnosed clinical OCD, David now looks after his mental health by taking the time out he needs.

• From taking ‘secret’ community drama classes, he ‘found an outlet’ to be himself and then to shape the rest of his career.

Soul mates, business partners, west end stars, Stuart and Francis are perhaps the most famous and loved husbands in the UK after documenting their journey of surrogacy and becoming a family to over a million followers on social media. Taking on the world together in business, travel and family life these best friends are redefining the narrative of a gay couple in 2023.

But it hasn’t always been this way.

Stuart and Francis grew up in the 80’s and 90’s with a previous generation fearful of aids, unhealthy relationships and ideas that being gay led to a difficult and lonely existence. (In 1967 same sex relationships were made legal if you were over 21, in 1994 the age was lowered to 18 and only in 2001 was the legal age lowered to 16 to match heterosexual relationships)

From being chased out of a classroom at school whilst the bullies shout “Gay, gay, gay” to hearing, “That’s disgusting” when ‘coming out’ to your parents. Their childhood evoked feelings of guilt, shame and suppressing their true selves. They never felt fully accepted.

Then breaking down the boundaries and healing family relationships in the midst of a terminal cancer diagnosis.

To processing grief in isolation, cut off from all support systems in the the first lockdown, you will hear how Stuart and Francis are now advocates for therapy.

Stuart and Francis’s story is not a singular journey of overcoming adversity but a story that will go down in British history telling the narrative of the shifting British culture and modern society towards LGBTQIA community.
