Recent investigations revealed that the technology caused significant price discrepancies, forcing different customers to pay varying amounts for identical items at the same store.

While the company originally marketed the software as a way to optimize retail sales and consumer deals, critics argued it functioned as an unfair form of algorithmic price discrimination.

Public reports highlighted that these experiments could cost families over $1,000 in extra annual expenses, prompting a rebuke from the FTC. In response to the outcry, Instacart acknowledged that the tests undermined customer trust and promised to terminate the practice across its platform immediately.
